I saw something online about a new MBP, but I didn't follow up. I'm sure it will be big news soon.

Thanks! That is useful. I have an iMac late 2015 and it is running Big Sur. I use it mainly for blogging and for operating Scrivener; writing software. But recently it has started to be very slow at times and I am wondering whether to upgrade based on your experience.

Well, of course only you can decide that. For me, my system had become painfully slow. It would take many minutes just too boot up and be ready to use. The new M1 iMac is up and ready to go in just seconds.

Question: by any chance were you running an older Lightroom rather than the subscription model?
What MAC operating system before and now if it is an older Lightroom?
My concern: I am running Lightroom (6.14) on Catalina which supposedly was not supposed to happen so I am curious if you moved an old version up to the new Operating System.

I was running High Sierra OS (The highest version I could run on my machine). I was running the latest LR Classic version that would run on my OS. When I tried to upgrade it said I would have to upgrade my OS. My LR and PS were both from the Creative Cloud subscription. However, that was not the only issue I had - just booting up to get where I could interact with the computer would take forever. One other reason I decided to upgrade is that my graphics card was starting to get flakey. Every now and then I would get all sorts of little squares popping up all over the screen. It was intermittent but very annoying.

Good guess! This isn't where the computer is going to live - I just had it on my kitchen table so I could set my old 27" iMac next to it and connect them with Thunderbolt cable to do the migration of apps and data.

The mouse? I assume it's the latest version since it came with the computer (it's color matched to the computer's color, as is the keyboard.

No, not all. However, I had a pretty good idea of what would not transfer / run beforehand. 90% of the apps that are 64 bit apps will run under Rosetta 2 if the app isn't made specifically for Big Sur and the M1 chip. The first time I tried to run a non-M1 app, I got a popup asking me if I wanted to install Rosetta. I clicked yes and it installed in 2 seconds. Now, I can run all the apps that are 64 bit (well, most of them). I had an old 2008 version of MS Office that no longer runs, but I expected that. If an app is 32 bit it will definitely not run. I tried to check which apps would run and which would not ahead of time.

I also upgraded to a Mac M1 mini late last year. Got 16 G RAM, but since i use external drives for data, I got 512 SSD internal drive. My 2012 mini was running fine, but I could see the writing on the wall as apps continued to move to 64 bit versions and I coud not upgrade to the latest OS (does not run 32 bit apps) and was noticing the slowing of processing. New M1 is blazing fast and I'm happy. For those of you evaluating moving up you can quickly find the 32 bit apps on your system with a free "Go64.app". Then you can evaluate the cost of upgrading those 32 bit apps.

Or, you can also just click on the Apple in the upper-left, then click "About this Mac". Then Click the button labeled "System Report" and on the next screen simply highlight "Applications" an it will show you which Apps are 32-bit/ unsupported.

Thanks, Basil - I agree that Mac shows resident 32 bit apps. Go64.app also includes a field to input app upgrade costs (which user has to track down, so not a big benefit other than the listing and totalling) - but this app also lists internal components (kernels ?) of software that will not run in 64 bit-only system. At this stage, there are 5 of these "component" pieces which belong to apps I use. I have not yet tested all their parent 64 bit apps to see if they prevent full use of the parent apps (or whether they were just unneeded sub-routines that have been replaced by other similar sub-routines). Everything I'm running is working now. Essentially I only had to ditch old versions of Photoshop, Lightroom (now unneeded replaced by ON1 Photo RAW) and a really old version of Quicken (replaced by Checkbook Pro).

That right there would make it worth using!

One thing I learned is that this M1 chip is so different in it's efficiency of using Ram that you can't compare it one-to-one with Ram on an old iNtel mac. I got the maxed o ut system, which is 8 cores, 16GB memory (not upgradable, so get what you think you'll need) and I got the 2TB SSD drive. (Probably more than I needed, but I figured better too much than not enough.

The "500 nits of brightness" won me over.

EDIT: 10:47 - "And now for the biggest disappointment..."

Great video.
