Yeah it is pretty clear to all that you are a GiMP hater and that is OK, to each his own.

I am certain that the many times I have taught GIMP to college students I did not come across as a GIMP hater.
dwmoar wrote:
As for me having a choice, as I said I chose to use Linux and because of that I also choose to use GiMP since Photoshop is not made for Linux and I refuse to run that bug riddled OS called Windows even virtually. Those are the choices I make and will stay with. Your cost argument is pretty lame, I bet you own a car, but yet complain about gas to drive it or when it comes time to repair or maintain it.

You would lose that bet.
dwmoar wrote:
To tell people GiMP is useless because you don't like it or can't use it is just stupid at best.

I never said it was useless. I gave a fair assessment of it and as for knowing how to use it I think the students who I taught how to use it would acknowledge I know how to use it quite well.
dwmoar wrote:
You argument about how bad GiMP is your opinion,

Which I can support with facts.
dwmoar wrote:
and we all can take it for what it is. Use what you like, no one else is telling you not to and you wouldn't listen even if they did.

Seems to me that you are in the same state, just replacing "GIMP" with "Windows".

There are a lot of us that choose Windows and have no problems with it. I have no problems with people running Mac or Linux. To each their own.

Oh I am so sorry almighty master, I should of known better, even though others say it works for them, or it works for me I should of never listened to anyone but you because it doesn't meet your requirements, ideas or goals for what software should or shouldn't do?

Can you ever forgive me since I chose not to run Windows in a virtual environment on my Linux machine, even if it is easy to do?

Can you forgive me because perhaps I don't have as many cameras or lenses as you seem to think is necessary or maybe haven't spent as much money on them as you have? Even thought you have no idea what I actually have or how much I have spent on said equipment.

Can you ever forgive me because I chose not to listen to your ranting on about how GiMP is so bad because it doesn't work for you are how you think it should work, so no one else should ever use it because it is bad and Photoshop or it ilks are some much better and you have to pay for software as a service.

Just so everyone knows, today I signed up for the Adobe subscription for Photoshop and Lightroom for $9.99 a month. I've been playing around with it and am very happy not having to learn a new program. It was a seamless transition because of my previous years of using CS6. I experimented with the new Photoshop on a recent photo taken at Joshua Tree National Park and am attaching it for you all.
I do hope everyone can treat each other with respect..... my initial intention for this post was not to cause any conflict between members, but to honestly know what other UHH members thought of GIMP and Affinity Photo compared to Photoshop. I am happy with my decision and I appreciate all of your thoughts, views and information. UHH is a wonderful place to chat with other photographers about topics like this. Am glad that you did what is right for you. Your post is not what cause conflicts. In the end all that matters is if you are satisfied with what you thought was best for you. Best of luck to you...... Nice photo by the way

The cost argument is silly. I like many here have multiple cameras. That's thousands of $$$. Add in the lenses and how could I possibly complain about my software cost at around $150.00 per year. If I can't afford the software I have no business affording the cameras.

That is silly. Not everybody has multiple cameras nor an extra $150. If they can save that $150 by using free software, why not. Your comment is very elitist.

A huge difference is that I do not go around telling others that they should not use Windows in lieu of Linux, or tell them that Windows is nothing but a money suck, or a waste of your time. Personally I don't give a damn if you choose to use it or not, that is entirely up to you and you alone to decide.

Personally I believe that no computer should be sold with a operating system already installed. It should be something that the user choose to have, not what some one else thinks it should come with.

Good on you Brent! I'm glad you found the right software that fits your needs and in the end that is all that is important.

Thanks for the tip about ACP. Don't you think Adobe will increase the price of the subscription in the future? They almost have to, right? Once they hook all the pros and non pros on the program they could easily raise the prices.

Yes, there will be increases. No viable business model, small or large, will leave out price increases. The question will always be how much. Frankly, a change from $9.99 to $10.99 would not hurt anyone serious about their photography. Even though you pay monthly, you are on an annual contract. A price increase will be on the next annual renewal. Even now, if you see a Creative Cloud sale for an annual contract, you can add it as an extension. My plan is current through October, 2022.

What did Kodak do with the price of film and developing over their lifespan? Has the price of a good wedding photographer gone up? The price will and should creep up.

Your use of the word "hook" is interesting. Adobe does not seem to release the numbers. Various business journals say there are somewhere around 15 to 20 million subscribers. Somebody likes the way it works. On the business side, there was a lot wrong with slower, massive and expensive updates. A monthly "expense" is easier than a semiannual "investment". For Adobe it improved consistency and predictability of revenue. It also helps with software piracy problems.

I don't see myself "hooked". Instead I see the subscription system allowing me access to better software more cheaply. Even if you quit, Lightroom Classic will continue leaving out only the Develop and Map modules. With Photoshop, you might consider saving any complex work as TIFFs or JPEGs. Bridge is free without the subscription as long as you have an account, even one you are not paying on.

Adobe is not "hoodwinking" people into the subscription. As with this long topic, there are always other choices.

"I signed up for the Adobe subscription for Photoshop and Lightroom...."

Have you had time to review the changes and enhancements since CS6? I could never justify the price of CS6 and started my digital photo life with Lightroom 4. So much stuff works better!
