Wow, QD. Very nice! I got some Sage Grouse in eastern Oregon at o-dark thirty but didn't own the proper gear needed at the time. I've been planning to go back for another try ever since. Yours are great!!

Thanks very much! Had the gear, no idea where to find them. Good to have friends! Good Luck! These had to be shot from the car (they apparently fly if you get out), lost sharpness on a few then remembered how much vibration the car produces if you want SHARP. Second thing, in relatively low light they move faster than you think - if I get a chance again, I'll kick up the ISO a bit and use Shutter priority.

Wow quixdraw. I've only been in Sharp-tail country in late fall. I've read about their mating display and now I have seen it.

Last night we were invited out to see the Sharptail Grouse do their Spring mating dance. This involved getting up at zero dark thirty, taking care of the dogs' needs, loading the gear and driving. We got there a little later than would have been ideal, the sun had just come up. These are popular game birds, and wonderful to watch, so our friends hold this opportunity close. I brought several cameras, but ended up with the usual combination, D7200 and AF S Nikkor 200-500 5.6 E ED. I did not need the telextender since as long as you stay in a vehicle, you can be quite close, though the available angles are challenging, as is the early light. i took a lot more photos than is my usual habit. Here are a few.

Excellent and interesting set quixdraw, love the portrait shot #5. We have lots of red grouse on the North Yorkshire moors.

Too many years ago, I drove to a lek near Medicine Lake in NE Montana. I hardly dared to breathe.
The slighted noise sent the grouse flying away from the blind. A couple landed on the roof.
When I opened the door to leave so did the grouse. I had to walk about a half mile from the parking area.
