Only the 18-270 is a DX lens. The 70-300 should work fine.

Will the 70-300 do the FX format?

Good deal and you have the option of using its DX mode with the DX lenses. Excellent processor and many capabilities.

Thanks Dave. I got the missus sold on the camera but am having trouble when it comes to the added cost of a general purpose lens. I found this however.

Abe’s of Maine has had a sketchy reputation in the past.

The 24-120 would be more versatile.
I’m a working pro, (hard at the moment since I shoot people) have the 24-70 2.8 but use the 24-120 a lot more. That extra range is really handy for me, despite the somewhat bigger size, vs the 24-85 you’re considering. https://www.mpb.com/en-us/used-equipment/used-photo-and-video/used-lenses/used-nikon-fit-lenses/nikon-af-s-24-120mm-f-4g-ed-vr/sku-1082565/
I wouldn’t hesitate to buy used from MPB or KEH. I’ve done it several times.

Here’s thread on using both on a D750: https://nikonites.com/d750/30841-d750-24-120-d750-24-85-a.html#axzz6qt8wW1G2

Really tough territory choosing a lens. Wife started with 18-55 then my old 18-105, than my 18-140 cast off and she was quite pleased. She shoots everything from flowers to wildlife, doesn't want anything too heavy and doesn't want to change lenses. A couple Yogi trips back she wanted to try the Tam 18-400 and thousands of shots later, it's a keeper. We do not use a magnifying glass, but the photos are quite acceptable despite the critiques from some of the pros here. The 24-85 is fine, but keep in mind the versatility she may desire or start collecting lenses! Best of luck!

Abe's has seen a lot of controversy on the forum and you may be more confident with B&H, Adorama, Cameta, KEH or some of the other frequently mentioned sources.

BTW, going back to Yogi-ville mid May

I would second the 24-120 f4. Use in on my d810. Great all around lens

I currently have a D5000 with a Tamron 18-270, Tamron 70-300 and a Nikon 50 prime. I have an opportunity to purchase a D750 body with two batteries and charger that has 10,000 actuations for $650.00. Is that a fair deal and do I really "need" it....lol?
Thanks in advance for your valued opinion.

It’s a fair price and forget about *need*. Most very likely you will enjoy it. If “very likely” proves wrong you can bail out at zero to minimal loss.

Keep your crop format body and zoom together until you’re sure you wanna part with that. If you really can’t afford the overlap in owning both then you should not dream of FF. Just stay with your quite decent crop format outfit and don’t leap at upgrading for no reason beyond a tempting price.

About the 24-85 and 24-120. I use both.

The 24-120 is a complete kit on its own.

The 24-85 is just part of a 3-lens kit of 24, 45, and 105. IOW, the 24-85 serves as a substitute for a 21 or 24 prime. So if I ever find an AF-S_G_VR wide prime it will immediately replace the 24-85 in that kit. It’s a very good compact zoom so I’d likely keep it a while to find out if it proves useful on its own.

Re: Abes’s of Maine.
Here’s a good sign for trouble.

While camera and lens prices may look good at Abe’s (likely grey market) look at the prices of accessories like batteries and memory cards.

Compare the difference of the ENEL 15 battery for the D750:
Abes’s of Maine is $169.
B&H is $54.
Abe’s doesn’t even state if theirs is a Nikon product!

Edit... I had to dig for it, but Abe’s has the Nikon product for $79.95 Regular price: $169.

Be afraid....be very afraid!

I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. I have mostly moved on from SLRs, but did not part with my 750 simply becuz it’s a really competent, and “semi compact“, SLR.

I even bought it some new lenses, so that says it’s gonna be around for the foreseeable future.
