I’d rather members have their actual name in their user ID. I find it weird to address “KnobbyKnees” as “Knobby” in my “great shots, Knobby” reply to their posting.

Stan

I get called "Dirt" all the time. Doesn't bother me a bit.

That's open for debate.

It's funny. You mentioned you have gone through six or seven forums looking for one to stay with. Now, three weeks in you are telling us what everybody should do here at UHH. One thing I like about UHH, even though it sometimes causes a little friction, is that everybody is free to do things their own way.

Now I'm sure you'll remember my avatar. I'll have to come up with a new one.

I agree with John Gault in that you will quickly find people you particularly watch for. I don’t look at everything in depth but do skim the digest every morning with my tea. It takes a good hour and a half for me and if I have a posting myself garnering some comments it takes a really long time because I think it important to acknowledge the time each person took to comment on my picture. I do private message with a few and, in fact, the first person to send me a P.M. through UHH has become one of my dearest friends.
And like Stan, I prefer to address someone by his/her name. Sometimes you will pick it up in a thread, sometimes you will see it in the exif info (is that weird that I might look for it?)
So having said that, I like your avatar but what’s your name, mate?

Yes, I agree. I have one dilemma with this. Being new to the forum is it appropriate???
I'm not sure so sometimes I've addressed someone by their name and sometimes I haven't.
I'll start doing it all the time now, especially that I've mentioned my dilemma here so hopefully people see this.
I just feel someone may think, "Hey, you just got here and don't know me enough to be acting like a friend."

Depends, if you know "Donkey_Slapper" is really named Bob, I would personally say "Thanks for the kind words Bob!" instead of "Thanks for the kind words "Donkey_Slapper"....

Hey, I have a good example!
Just after making my reply here, I checked someone's photos I commented on.
The person (thread starter) came back and thanked me.
Now, every other person in the thread she thanked and used their name.
With me, she just gave a, "Thank you"
Every other person had as many posts as herself (1,000+) or more.
Suggests to me she was not comfortable to drop in my name.

The other issue is addressing males or females.
I had a fun reply to make to one lady and would've loved to have dropped her name in the post.
However, I felt it would've made things too personal so I left it out despite feeling with her name included, my reply would've been slightly more comical.
I feel it's more appropriate to address the males earlier by name (being a male myself) than myself addressing the ladies by their name.

Everyone should have an avatar here. It makes it so much easier to recognize posters and remember who said what. If you don't have one, please consider adding one.

On the long and winding road I discovered that seniority
does not necessarily mean competence.

I could present a case study that's a doozy...
I havn't; to protect the guilty.

And I reckon Avatars should be compulsory
on a Photo Forum.
