Should I simply take it back?

Sunday I purchased a brand new 6T WD hard drive to use for backup copying of my most recent photographs. (my others are all full!). Yesterday, I plugged it in and chose one of my smaller HD's to copy to it. That's what I've always done in the past. Well, hours later I still had 0% copied! The computer crashed a couple of times. The new HD was "unavailable" about every 10th image. I tried a different USB cord, and that seemed to help. Now, I've learned that apparently the power cord connection isn't firm and keeps losing contact. So now when it stops on a particular image, I simply push in on the power cord and it will refire. I'm not sure I want to fight with this thing for the rest of my life. Should I keep pressing on, or simply remove all the files I was actually able to copy to it and take it back?

It could be the USB port in your computer where it doesn't matter which HD you connect.

I always recommend Seagate hard drives.

Actually, I've tried it on every port I have. Doesn't seem to matter. I did replace the USB cord that came with it, as that seemed to be a problem. I'm thinking the power cord is also problematic.

The first three HD's I had to crash were all Seagates. I decided they weren't a safe choice. But now I'm wondering about WD as well!

I've been using WD drives ever since I had numerous problems with Seagates. Maybe in today's world neither of them are that high quality.

Segate Barracuda drives appear to be decent.
But for the past 10+ years I've only used WD.
I used to get WD Caviar drives.
A while back I put a 2Tb WD Gold (Enterprise) drive in the desktop, works fine.
What operating system are you using? Any possibility that the OS cannot handle a drive that large?

I've put large drives in old systems and had to partition the drive because the OS wouldn't handle the drive size.
I don't know if that is still problem.

Do you have a local computer shop you can call and ask?

I talked to my computer guru last night. But I didn't tell him of the problems I was experiencing with the HD - only that backing up seemed to be impossible. It took me over 6 hours to back to less than 100 megs because the HD kept becoming "unavailable."

I've never been able to figure out which WD drives I'm purchasing. They all come in boxes that look exactly alike and the sales people say there's nothing on the box to indicate which "level" of drive is enclosed - only by the price. And when things go on sale, they're all the same price!

I’ve seen a client’s external WD fail without warning. Thankfully I was able to revive it to save the data.

Good to know! How recent was this and were they from Fry’s or ebay?

All of mine failed without warning. It's sort of the nature of the beast, I guess.

That is really odd- hadn't noticed they weren't marked. Mine a 4TB WD Passport has been working well for a couple of years. Did take overnight into the next morning to load. If you have Windows and click on Computer, the Backup size and current usage come up.

I don't actually remember where I purchased them. Probably from Costco. And yes, that was some years back - like 5 or more.

Seen Seagates fail also.
They all die at some point.
Some sooner than others.
Even faster death rate for the $29 drives.

WD and Seagate are both good. I simply prefer WD.
Some prefer Seagate.
Some prefer another brand.
And each manufacturer provides drives with varying levels of quality/reliability.

I just had a Sony DVD player die after 8 years, does that mean it's a bad brand?
