Honestly and simply, yes, return it. I prefer equipment that works without concerns.

Sunday I purchased a brand new 6T WD hard drive to use for backup copying of my most recent photographs. (my others are all full!). Yesterday, I plugged it in and chose one of my smaller HD's to copy to it. That's what I've always done in the past. Well, hours later I still had 0% copied! The computer crashed a couple of times. The new HD was "unavailable" about every 10th image. I tried a different USB cord, and that seemed to help. Now, I've learned that apparently the power cord connection isn't firm and keeps losing contact. So now when it stops on a particular image, I simply push in on the power cord and it will refire. I'm not sure I want to fight with this thing for the rest of my life. Should I keep pressing on, or simply remove all the files I was actually able to copy to it and take it back?

The Buffalo HDI had was replaced because a Buffalo person and the techi I use said that at 12 years old it could go at any time. Bought another Buffalo.

I totally agree. Just hope they have another one and that it is not also defective!

Don't know what that is. Care to elaborate?

Try the hard drive on another computer, if it does the same thing then it is the hard drive, if not try another sub port on your other computer.

I also tried it in my laptop. It did exactly the same thing.

Try this. You might have to have more than one, but fast and safe and will probably outlive us all. The only thing that slows it down is if you only have 2.0 usb and not 3 on your computer.

It was plugged in to every port I have. And half of them were 3s.

Buffalo is a hard disk maker - they make hard-wired as well as wireless disks. The one I have is hard-wired; also have a wireless Synology.

Each of these has individual HD's of some gigi or tera byte size that comprise the total bytes of the unit. Thus if one unit goes bad, it can be replaced and the RAID set-up can restore the data that that was stored on the failed unit.

It didn't need it. And the electrical wouldn't stay connected more than about 1 minute.
