As I am sure you know the Tamron 150-600 and the similar Sigma lens are very popular optics for wildlife photography. I am sure that you will be happy with any of them.
I prefer to use what the manufacturer makes for their cameras and if I had to make a selecton I would go for the Nikon 200-500 VR lens.

Excellent reply. I have a D500 and I also have a Tamron 150-600g2 lens, but now I have the 500 f/5.6 PF and if I want to, not in low-light situations, throw the 1.4 tele on it for that loving feeling of almost having the 950 reach on my D500. But, I always have myself saddled with 2 bodies and sometimes 3, D850 and a D5 along with a Mirrorless setup. I shoot a lot of NCAA and Pro sports, and I do like to go out and capture my Birds and Wildlife. Anyways, I have to say that I'm in your camp when it comes to glass, Go With OEM 80% of the time. You slap a 3rd. Party lens on a D850 or talk Sony and put a 3rd. party lens on the new A1 and those bodies will point out every flaw in that lens. You are not going to put a Bench Seat from an old Ford truck into a new GMC, right?

I have a D500 and the Nikon 200-500. I wind up using my Nikon 2.8 70-200 with a 1.7 teleconverter instead of the 200-500 The larger lens is heavier to carry and to track Marine Mammals and I find the images on the 70-200 combined with the teleconverter better than the 200-500.

Hello fellow Hedgehog"s;
Again I reach out to you.I am using a Nikon D 500 for wildlife and Birds and need a lens with a longer reach .I have the Tamron 70-200 2.8 G2 with a 2.0 convertor. What would your real life usage reccomendations be ? I was thinking of The Tamron 150-600 G2.
Thank you,

I have the Tamron 150-600G2 and I paid full price and would do it again if something happened to this one. All the lenses mentioned are great but, you buy a long zoom to use at the long end. 600 is farther than 500 and it makes a difference. I have taken some wonderful long end pictures of birds.

I have taken some pictures handheld to see if I can do it. Yeah it can be done but at the long end it is nearly impossible to hold the camera still enough to get a good picture.

I shoot with a Nikon D850 which means the 600 is really 600mm on your 500 with a crop sensor you multiply the length by the crop factor which is 1.5, that means with this lens on your Nikon D500 you will go out to the equivilent of 900mm, what fun.

I had the Tamron 150-600 and it performed well, but as I got older it was tough for me to handle. I am now looking at the Canon 100-400 ism ii used from a reputable dealer that I have purchased equipment from in the past for $919.00. I already have the 1.4x and 2x adapter and can use either or both at the same time. All of my other lenses except one are Tamron so love the brand

I do not think Nikon thinks there is a big need for this and, if it ever did materialize, the cost would be very close to the 500 PF - IMO.
.

The Z 200-600 is on the Z lens roadmap.

If priced there my 200-500 will stay with me. I use it for wildlife so always at f5.6 and high shutter speed. I use M exposure mode and auto ISO. I got a $15 mechanical adapter for it to use on my Z50 and Z6 to reduce fussing with my FTZ. Easy accurate manual focus with focus peaking. No VR but Z6 has IBIS. So the Z 200-600 will only give me minor GAS easily overcome if priced over $1,200.

The Tamron is a nice lens, gives good IQ...but it is heavy. I have had one for 2 years or so but just bought a Nikon 500PF and am very happy I did. It is actually hand holdable where the Tamron isn’t and has better IQ. It’s more money...but well spent IMO. Using it on a D7500.

I like attaching it to my D500 and D850. One heckuva lens for the price.

It’s part of their roadmap. Supposed to be out this year. And it’s not their S line so it should be affordable.

Actually the 500 with the 1.4 on your D500 will give you 1050mm equivalence.

I know, I just realized that a little later and didn't go back to correct it. Still though, I do feel that is a great combo for my D5 and D500.

I agree with Camerapapi! Go for the Nikon 200-500. I bought one and glad I did! Also bought a set of Nikon teleconverters so with the 2x is upped to 400-1000mm. Sure, you lose a couple of stops with the teleconverter but in outdoor sunlight it doesn't matter.

I took this moon photo handheld, leaning against my house, with the 200-500 without a teleconverter.
