I have Tamron 150-600 G2 and love it.
Haven't used it enough to make very critical focus and sharpness decisions but more then suits my needs

And the answer to that is no. That lens will not autofocus with the 2.0 teleconverter. And it will only autofocus out to about 420mm with the 1.4 teleconverter because of the variable aperture. I have the 200-500 on my D500 and though it will AF through the entire zoom range with the 1.4 I’ve found that it really slows the focus and I get better IQ just cropping than using the teleconverter.

If your budget allows, the Nikon 500mm f5.6 pf or the Nikon 200-500mm. I own and use the 500mm f5.6 on my D500.

I have the Tamron 150-600g2 use it on a D7200 & D810. I love it. I have only had it a little over a year, but i have found nothing i dont like.
I also have the 1.4 ii tele. But dont use it. I have everything covered (lens wise) so do not need to use it. Not sure about using a tele. on the G2, mine will not work on it.

I would say work on ways to try getting closer (blinds, researching and better timing of wildlife, and maybe cropping in more) instead of going to a 600mm.

Have the Tamron 150-600 version 1. Excellent sharpness up to 500 but really suffers all out at 600. I therefore opted to purchase the Sigma 150-600 and found it was sharp all the way through. About two months ago a local photographer was selling his seldom used Nikon 200-500 for a very attractive price. I went to look at the lens and took my Sigma. I wasn't going to invest in another lens unless it proved superior. I shot the price sign of a local gas station that had prices up on one of those dot-matrix signs. The Nikon was better -- not by much, but enough that I did buy the lens. If you want new, the Sigma is a good choice and won't disappoint you, but for about the same money you should be able to find an excellent copy of the Nikon lens which I find to be slightly sharper. When I tested the two lenses side by side, I only racked the Sigma out to 500 so as to match the Nikon at that length. There may have been a little less sharpness between 500-600, but can't vouch for that and like I mentioned before, I felt the sharpness at 600 on the Sigma was acceptable and better than the version 1 of the Tamron lens. I understand Tamron version 2 is equal in sharpness to the Sigma lens.

Here's another vote for the Nikon 500mm f5.6 PF, which I use with my D500. Almost perfect except no zoom. Yesterday, knowing I would need a zoom lens, I took my Tamron 100-400, which also yields excellent results. Both of these are handholdable, although I did bring along a monopod. The 200-500, for me, requires a tripod, which limits where I will take it (and will add to the cost of the lens acquistion).

One anecdote about the Tamron 150-600 G2. I borrowed one from a friend for a day's shooting. My wife looked at the images while I was processing them, and told me that she didn't like them and that I needed to get a long prime lens! How many times does that happen? The 500mm PF was the result.

I do not think Nikon thinks there is a big need for this and, if it ever did materialize, the cost would be very close to the 500 PF - IMO.
