So they are going to make a new 200-500 and it is NOT to be an S ! ! ?? - makes NO sense to me.

The are going to make a 200-600 for the Z camera's. It has been on Nikon's schedule for about a year now. A list of Z lens introduction is on the Nikon web site.

I believe it will be in the price range of the Sony 200-600.

The moon is pretty much black and white (greys), did you post process and get all the color?

I agree with Camerapapi! Go for the Nikon 200-500. I bought one and glad I did! Also bought a set of Nikon teleconverters so with the 2x is upped to 400-1000mm. Sure, you lose a couple of stops with the teleconverter but in outdoor sunlight it doesn't matter.

I took this moon photo handheld, leaning against my house, with the 200-500 without a teleconverter.

That's one really good shot with the 200-500. It is a very good lens as all of the other Nikkors. With a lens that is produced by the Camera Body Manufacturer, I find it hard to go wrong. But, I use a lot of the different Zeiss lenses for inside work, mainly when we are doing a Product shoot or a Model shoot, and that is real glass. Zeiss is a leader when it comes to "Getting the Shot". I have also done a lot of Macro with Zeiss and there I can honestly say that my Macro work is just as good with the Nikon 105mm f/2.8 as the Zeiss lineup. But anyways, Thank You for sharing the pic, not bad when you just decide to go lean against the house and shoot the moon.

I heard that once the COVID deal is under control that the 200-600 will be out shortly thereafter. They already have copies of the lens according to my friend who works for Nikon. There is talk that this Lens will make it on the bodies just in time for the Olympics. I can hardly wait to get that into my hands. The only downside that my buddy told me is the fact, that you will want to use a monopod due to it being a really heavy unit. But, I have always heard about the weight deal whenever it comes to glass. I hope that its an f/4 at least throughout the zoom range. I like the fact that you keep up with Nikon for us here on this forum, it does not go unappreciated.

It should be less. The Sony lens is a G lens which is their most expensive line of lenses. From what one poster said the Nikon is not their top line. Also Sony lenses tend to be a little more expensive overall than the Nikon lenses. I would think the lens would be in the same price range as their 200-500. I could be wrong, but that is my thoughts on the matter.

Nikon wants to continue to prove their S lens superiority ( or, at least logically they SHOULD) ! Why do you think they made the 58mm f.095 ?? The new lens will HAVE to be superior in every way to the 200-500 and also to the Sony - sooo, how much do you think that will cost ?? Nikon has never held back on their pricing - just to be "competitive" - and if it is not "better" than the Sony, then what is the point ??

I have a D500 and mostly do wildlife (including bird) photography. I purchased the Sigma 150-600C a couple of months before the Nikon 200-500 was released. I was really disappointed because I usually would stick with Nikon glass. I figured I would use the Sigma lens for a bit and sell it if I wanted. Well, I haven't sold it yet. It does produce outstanding wildlife photos on the D500. Saying that I would get the Nikon 200-500 but I think you would not be unhappy with the Tamron G2 or the Sigma. I would not recommend the Sigma Sport version if you are going to handhold (which I normally do for birds).

And the answer to that is no. That lens will not autofocus with the 2.0 teleconverter. And it will only autofocus out to about 420mm with the 1.4 teleconverter because of the variable aperture. I have the 200-500 on my D500 and though it will AF through the entire zoom range with the 1.4 I’ve found that it really slows the focus and I get better IQ just cropping than using the teleconverter.
