I think ALL Marines raised that flag.

My uncle was a Navy Storekeeper on an attack transport. One of their jobs was to land supplies on the beach after the Iwo invasion started. He was sent in on the 3rd day, and the Japanese were still lobbing artillery and mortar shells at the re-supply boats at the beaches. Their supply boat crew didn't get out unscathed, though. His leading petty officer was killed, and a couple others were wounded.

The study of the flag raisers has been the subject of intense study. There have been a number of programs on the History, Smithsonian, and other cable channels. What was remarkable was the individuality of the flag raisers. Each wore his uniform in a unique way. One may have worn two canteens on the belt. Some wore leggings, other wore cuffed pants. Rifles were slung in various manners; different knives were carried; and helmets were covered a bit differently.

The modesty of these men who are/were part of the "Greatest Generation", never cease to amaze me.

A little bit of an overreaction on your part.

Joe Rosenthal took, what is probably the most famous photograph ever taken. The photograph is of Harlon Block, Harold Keller, Ira Hayes, Harold Schultz, Franklin Sousley, and Michael Strank raising the flag on Mount Suribachi.

1st Lt. Harold G. Schrier was the one who raised the first flag on Mount Suribachi but it was considered too small and was replaced by the second flag, which Rosenthal photographed being raised.

Thanks for remembering and reminding us!

Just as a point of interest, Ira Hayes was a Pima Indian and was portrayed by Tony Curtis in the movie The Outsider.

I am sorry to rain on your parade, but this is not the most famous photograph ever taken. Equally famous photograph titled Flag Over Reichstag was taken by Russian photographer Yevgeni Khaldei with Leica III camera in Berlin on May 8, 1945 and the next day Germany capitulated.

I can attest the degree to which the Iwo Jima flag raisers were held in awe. As a boot Marine in 1955 we studied Marine Corps history and I met some men still on active duty who served in WW11. I too have
some black sand from Iwo, given to me by one of those who survived. God bless all who served, in what
ever service in whatever way. Semper Fi

I was walking back to my car after shooting the moon rising over the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial and grabbed this shot. Not iconic like the original but I kinda like it. I also included the moonrise shot.

Well done, beautiful photos.

Yes, I have been known to have human frailties from time to time. I am no stranger to apologizing for my actions. I was brought up to act like a man and be responsible for myself/my actions. Thanks for noticing.

Two minor notes: The combat photographer took the original picture (with the smaller flag). The Corpsman who was part of the flag raising is now in doubt do to some facts stemming from the taken picture by Rosenthal. I don't have all the facts but because of the advances in technology in photography, they say it was not the Navy Corpsman in the picture. I'm waiting for more definative proof myself.
