That would have been the USS Missoula. The first flag was photographed by Staff Sgt. Louis Lowery.

Joe Rosenthal took, what is probably the most famous photograph ever taken. The photograph is of Harlon Block, Harold Keller, Ira Hayes, Harold Schultz, Franklin Sousley, and Michael Strank raising the flag on Mount Suribachi.

1st Lt. Harold G. Schrier was the one who raised the first flag on Mount Suribachi but it was considered too small and was replaced by the second flag, which Rosenthal photographed being raised.

Any idea how they identified the soldiers in that famous photo? All we see is the back of their helmeted heads.

Why wouldn't anybody be interesting in debunking legends? If you mean me personally, why would you make a ridiculous insulting comment? I served honorably as a combat Marine. I love the USMC and everything it represents. Why would I not want the truth about the flag raising to come out even after these years. Why shouldn't the identity of the real flag raisers be known so their families can achieve recognition as much as the originally named flag raisers did.

What a silly and insulting question you ask. If you have a personal problem with me then I would ask you to man up and spit it out so we can all enjoy your rage.

PS: Bob tells me you most likely meant his friend and not me. In that regard I apologize for my comment.

But regarding his friend and debunking legends I would still ask, why wouldn't anybody be interested in debunking legends?

Dennis, I think his question was aimed at me because of this comment, https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/tpr?p=12025452&t=686863

You're very welcome, Dennis. I followed the research regarding Keller and Gagnon. I found that quite interesting. A good acquaintance of mine was in the second wave to land on Iwo. He also spent a good deal of his later life debunking "legends" regarding the USMC. He was quite a nice, quiet, and humble individual.

I was walking back to my car after shooting the moon rising over the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial and grabbed this shot. Not iconic like the original but I kinda like it. I also included the moonrise shot.

Truly worthy of the title, "The Greatest Generation". Yes, there are heros in all generations and the Nation is indebted to them for their service and sacrifices. What I believes sets that generation apart however is that the majority of the Nation rolled up its sleeves to contribute to the effort to provide for and to support the troops.

I'm not so sure that such a unified effort would ever be possible again for "These times they are a'changing".

There are so many significant events that take place and only 365 days each year, so each date likely has multiple events of interest. For example, Feb 23 was not only the date the flag went up on Iwo Jima, it was also the date of the initial Mexican attack on the Alamo in San Antonio, and the date the allied offensive into Iraq began in 1991. A quick check reveals many other historical events on that date, just like on every other date.
