In the past I've lamented my failure to get a half way decent picture of a Kingfisher. When I am in their territory they just mock me! These shots aren't great by any means. They were shot from a car window hand holding the D850 with the 200-500, which is almost more camera than I can heft. This fellow was sitting atop a Mangrove making a lot of noise. I think I can safely say these are my best Kingfisher shots to date!

Carol, Great images. Consider using your favorite program in image 2 to eliminate the twigs that are distracting.

Wonderful! I adore these birds, and am among the many who are constantly frustrated with attempts to photograph.

Your fellow is a gal! I learned with my first kingfisher post that the female, unlike most species, is the one with the showier colors (rust-banded breast, in this case).

Good set! When I get similar (not of this particular bird) just as I would like except the eye glint, I wonder if a flash extender would be worth adding to the kit.

Very nice shots, especially for such a difficult subject.

Thank you, Stan. I did remove twigs that were sprouting atop his head. I just wish he had been in a prettier spot.

Better than any I have gotten, Carol. I might as well try to photograph Mars in the daytime. Nice job.

Great work so far! Keep it up. I've never had a Kingfisher this close.

Thanks for the biology lesson, Linda. I had no idea. I usually don’t see much more than a squawking blue streak as they do a fly by.

Thank you for a very generous comment. I guess for a Kingfisher, they aren’t bad but I have seen some shots of them to drool over!

Thank you! I never tried using flash on wild birds so I don’t have an opinion but surely others here might.

Thank you! I had hoped for better but I have a hard time shooting from the car and I do much better if I have the opportunity to set up my tripod with that heavy rig.
