For the newbies: the Ken Rockwell comment is a jab. Ken has a wonderful website (Kenrockwell.com) that offers tons of great information.

IMHO the jabs come from people who dislike being embarrassed by all he has done and shares freely while they haven't done anything like that. So they try to cover up their lack of contribution by complaining. I don't mind because I consider everything everyone says as their opinion.

:-P

you miss understood me. I was praising Ken Rockwell, I find his information extremely helpful. If I want information he is the first person I go to. I suppose its a matter of British sense of humor vs US. There is a difference and not always understood from both points of view. Now I expect to get a reaction from those who do not like his manner of earning a living. His comments are honest, he is an obviously well educated man & very knowledgeable about photography. Hence my choice of cameras, please try to read a little deeper my friend. D40 have you read his comments D300 ditto D700 ditto. That's the reason I have all three, now maybe you understand me & my contribution to the photo world cannot possibly be known by you. Ken does know everything, all you newbies just try him.

Thank you Goofie. I'm still learning about lighting etc. so your comment is very helpful. We did not take this picture but your advice definitely gives us something to make sure we watch when we are in a situation like this.

Thank you MtnMan. I believe I see what you are talking about. I will try out your suggestions to see what I can do. I'm slowly learning PSE10 as well as attempting to learn to do more than "snap" a picture. This one was taken for us so I felt it was a good one to ask for help on.

Thank you again for taking the time to explain a possible fix!

Thank you Wellhiem!

This really is an improvement! I appreciate the way that you listed the steps you took to create this look. I can now bring it into PSE and see if I can recreate it. I'm sure this method will help not only with this picture, but with any others that may have this same effect.

KG,

Thank you for the reply. I'm just learning a bit about masks now so I'm interested in trying to use one for this problem. I've not thought about using gels for the flash. I do use a Gary Fong Puffer on my flash, would this help with an issue like this? I was not the photographer that took this picture but we are going to try to recreate the shot as much as possible and see what we can fix so your suggestions will come in very handy. Thank you again!

Thank you PalePictures!

You have provided me with plenty of directions to try! I've been telling my husband his head has been the problem for years!! LOL

There are so many post processing options out there that sometimes I become overwhelmed. Having guidance as you have given really helps out a lot. I'm going to be very busy this weekend trying out the suggestions from you and the others who have been kind enough to share their tips!

Harry,

First off no offense taken! We learn from not so positive comments as well as the positive ones! If all the comments were good then we would have nothing to change. I'm extremely interested in bokeh so your DOF information was very valuable to me. I've so much to learn! There are so many lens types and focus values that it is almost like going back to school and into the dreaded math courses again. This time though I have something that I want to learn, I want to be able to move into the magic of Manual. As for the red eye, that was laziness on my part. That is one fix that I do know how to do LOL.

Thank you again for your comments. Please don't let the term "newbie" stop you from stating the issues as you see them, at least on my part. I know when I post something I'm taking the risk of hearing something I don't want to hear. It's just when people get snarky and give answers that are totally off the subject without offering anything dealing with the subject that bothers me. A snarky comment that deals with my question, I can understand.

Infocus and MtMan,

This really is nice! Of course I'm a sucker for bokeh. It is the first thing (along with silouhettes) that I want to master. I agree with cropping some of the top off. That may take away some of what I'm seeing that bothers me. And for some reason the shoulder and top sleeve of my husband (camera right) looks off. Maybe I can go in there and erase some. Hmmm wonder if I can do that in real life....LOL

Thanks again for taking the time to work on this and providing the steps you used to get there. The steps are what helps me try it out myself.

Allen this is really a great improvement! Did you darken the lighting? It looks like it has lost that neon type glow. I love the color of the skin as well. I'm going to show this to my husband when he gets home this evening. I bet he is going to love it.

Thank you again for taking the time to help out with this. I truly do appreciate it.

Hi Robbie7,
No worries I wouldn't know who the "star" is either! If you ask my husband he would probably say he was. LOL but the gentleman who has been on t.v. and movies is on the camera left, Mr. Tim Ross. He was in Star Trek, Next Generation. This is totally my husband's interest. He was in CA for the ceremonies surrounding Walter Koenig receiving his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Mr. Koenig is best known for his role as Chekov in Star Trek.

Thank you. When I am taking photos
I do like to at least try to get it right in camera. Often resulting in a no edit situation. That must be every photographers dream, editing programs are great for your particular photo because it is not to your liking, personally I think it is great as is but that's my opinion. I honestly thought the equipment used was rather expensive, by that I am not running down your camera, I was simply surprised.
45 years into photography. 78 YOA & I am still learning.
I wish you well in your hobby. I know exactly what you mean about taking a risk when posting or replying.

Harry.

Ah, my apologies. There are a number of UHH's who criticize him. I have no problem with factual disagreement with his opinions but no interest in criticism by folks who haven't offered what he has.

I like most of his stuff.

My husband was in Hollywood for the Star Ceremony for Walter Koenig and had an opportunity to have his picture taken with Tim Russ by a friend. To us it looks like they were both photo shopped into the background but this is the actual picture that was taken.

Any ideas why it should look this way and how we can minimize this look? We were only given the .jpeg version. Thanks for any help/suggestions you may have.

I suspect the reason it looks this way is because the photo was taken using the on camera flash, so the 2 men were more illuminated than the background. On camera flash from a "point and shoot" type camera can make a photo look a bit flat.
