I believe the fact that you "don't print often" can be a problem with printers. They tend to clog without a certain amount of use. I have tried to remember to print more often than I have to prevent such problems.

Mark, the HP printers will amaze you and their ink supply system will save you money and frustration, all the ink I can use and cost is based on # of pages printed per month. I have used HP for over ten years and am very, very satisfied, check it out. If you belong to the ink program, you get free support, even after warranty is gone. I use the HP Office Jet Pro 8710 all in one, great machine.

I second Bridges comment about Brother printers. I’ve had a variety of brands over the years, and Brother is the best performing.

We've been using Brother all in ones, work well, latest one even prints photos well, last a long time, reasonable ink cost.

Does not have to be wireless, but scanning & copying is necessary. I've aligned heads, cleaned nozzles deeply, changed cartridges, updated drivers ... with no improvement. I don't print often. Time for a new printer.

Thanks for your feedback.

I have an Epson ET-4550 All-In-One (Tank Printer) and I Love it.
I second what BurkPhoto said.

Smudgie prints are usually caused by the wrong print settings for the paper you are using. Is it possible that your paper is more shiny than normal printer/copier paper? If that is not the case, I would definitely agree with the suggestions for a laser printer.

My EPSON does this. I can send it back to Epson or I can do it myself following a You Tube video. Had to do it twice so far but works a treat. I'm thinking the smudging is coming from a build of ink under the heads. Roll of kitchen towel,100% alcohol and a pair of vinyl gloves might be all you need. And 30 minutes.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Mark,
I have an Epson 3750 that uses ink tanks and is less expensive to use than the cartridges. I have not used it to print photos. I don’t use it a lot but works fine when I need to print or scan a document.

I agree with suggestions to buy a laser printer if you only will use it to print documents. The cartridges last MUCH longer than inkjet cartridges sand the cost per print in MUCH lower. I’ve been happy with HP, Dell, Canon and Samsung.

I had an HP printer that lasted nine years and linked well with the computer. I never had to do settings on the printer itself, unlike the Epson super ink tank printer I replaced it with. I have to change the paper settings at the printer itself as it does not interface well with the same computer I had with the old HP. The old HP was used for both business and personal use and it wasn't a big fancy priced one. More around the range of $150 less a $49 coupon from BJ's. I would NOT recommend the Epson. I tried to print out some 1099s with it from TDA a few days ago and it would not print in Landscape mode if I wanted to do 2 sided printing. It kept reverting to Portrait. Sorry I ever bought it. Not worth the $399 I paid for it.

I like my Epson ET-2760 ink tank printer. I'm still using the original ink I got with it. It has printed 2,693 pages, and the ink tanks are more than half full. I bought a complete set of ink for $62. I like the fact that it prints on both sides of the paper. As a matter of fact, I still have some ink remaining in the original bottles. I'll have to add that one of these days. The bottles hold more ink than the tanks do.

I have also done this. Also bought a heading cleaning kit where you force a cleaning liquid thru the heads to unclog them. Worked pretty good, was cheap and easy to do. Might try that before you junk it.

I have two canon printers. An all in one MX32 that is slow but reliable. The other is a laser that scans and copies but not in color model MF264DW. Canon’s ink is expensive but I use them daily.

If you are considering a laser, get an HP.
I had the first HP color laser printer. What a piece of crap that was. I hope they are better now.
I have had a Xerox color laser all-in-one for the last few years. Runs rings around that HP.

I have had two Epson work force printers and they are nothing but trouble. They won't print and an hour is needed on the phone with them to fix problem. I put my last one in the trash when it was 1-1/2 years old!
