My Canon Pixma 7720 prints smudged and often unreadable documents. I do not print images. I'm looking for recommendations from happy users. Does not have to be wireless, but scanning & copying is necessary. I've aligned heads, cleaned nozzles deeply, changed cartridges, updated drivers ... with no improvement. I don't print often. Time for a new printer.
Thanks for your feedback.

If you don't print photographs then a laser printer would be much more reliable.
I have a Canon TR-8520 and am pleased so far.
It's an AIO (All-in-One).
I don't print a ton either.

Oh, and it's WIFI, which I love because I can print from the laptop when the desktop is asleep.
(Desktop is upstairs.)

Epson EcoTank 4700 or similar... The EcoTanks take bottled ink that is MUCH less expensive than cartridges. The printer comes with full ink bottles that will last a long time, and a replacement set is very reasonable.
https://epson.com/For-Work/Printers/Inkjet/EcoTank-ET-4700-All-in-One-Supertank-Printer/p/C11CG85201We bought one about four months ago and have found it quite reliable and clean. It's really a business all-in-one (printer, copier, FAX, scanner with automatic document feeder). It can print "okay" photos, but with only four colors, it is not really designed to do that.

I feel the Brother machines are very reliable and give you the most bang for your buck. We used a lot of them where I used to work and since replacing an Epson with one, I've had zero problems printing. It even does a decent job printing photos though perhaps not as well as Canon or the HP Envy line which is geared somewhat for photographs.
I have an Epson XP-620. Use it a lot for scanning and printing photos. Have had it for years and never a hitch. Not the most expensive either.

If you are considering a laser, get an HP.
If you only need print, I second the suggestion of a laser. HP makes several good ones in all price ranges and even have some additional preferred features. When looking for one also check to see what toner cartridges will cost as that cost can vary greatly based on printer. I current use a Brother laser and toner replacements run about $30-40 depending on seller. I have also used HP lasers as well as one of their color lasers. Their cost have come down but the replacement cartridges can be expensive. Ive had a number of inkjet printers from HP, Epson, etc. My wife has an Epson that is about 6 years old and it still works fine as does its WiFi. Unfortunately my luck with Epsons is not as good.
I have had a lot of printers for business use. Hp's are good, but I don't have any now that have lasted the test of time. I do have an HP t120 plotter that has been around for 7 years, is wireless and prints 24" wide for plan set submissions. The printers I use now for office work are Brothers. The laser duplex I have and use daily was purchased in the late 90's and shows no sign of fading. The newer style that I thought of replacing it with is wireless, this one is not. For color prints, I have the Brother MFCJ6920 I believe. Actually, we have 2. One in my office and one in wife's studio along with the HP T120. The Brother printers have 2 output trays loaded that can hold letter, legal or ledger sized paper. The paper trays and printing are done with the long edge parallel to the front face, so the footprint is smaller front to back. They are wireless and able to duplex scan and print. I use third party cheap ink in them (had to switch back to $$$ oem inks on the HP T120) and never had a problem with either for the last 8+/- years.
Photo printers are a a different story. Epson for me.
Thank you (all) for the suggestions and recommendations. I will carefully consider my options and choose a printer.
Always appreciative of your time, effort and advice.

Any Epson.
The WF series is what I have, print, scan, copy save to USB memory, wired and Wi-Fi.
I also marketed their products so well trained on the differences between mfgs
I would demo prints by printing then dropping the photo into a glass of water vs other printers which would make the water colorful.
Good luck.

My EPSON does this. I can send it back to Epson or I can do it myself following a You Tube video. Had to do it twice so far but works a treat. I'm thinking the smudging is coming from a build of ink under the heads. Roll of kitchen towel,100% alcohol and a pair of vinyl gloves might be all you need. And 30 minutes.
