Well, it seems like a 60-40 split. Some hoggers really like it playing games with SPAM callers, and others think I'm an ass. Well golly gee! I'm not offended by the ass-callers.

The best ever handling of SPAM callers is by a guy named Tom Mabe, who is a regular on You Tube. This one is my favorite...enjoy...

My number is registered with both the Federal and the State "Do Not Call" list. It is ILLEGAL for these people to call me, but since they do it anyway, I'll waste as much time as I can with them.

Disagree. You may miss a wanted incoming call.

Verizon has a function setting named "Do Not Call." The phone does not ring if the incoming call has a number that is not in the user's contact list.

The incoming call number is displayed until the caller hangs up.

If the incoming call is legitimate but not in the user's contact list, Verizon has a workaround. If the caller calls back within 60 seconds, the phone will accept the call and ring.

Verizon has this function built in at no extra cost. I have found it a boon.

Note that Verizon also offers a Block Call function so the user can keep a number from even showing or ringing in the first place.

In my effort to discourage robo calls I have started a new plan. When I get one of these calls I listen long enough to confirm that it is truly a robo call. Once confirmed to my satisfaction I then simply set the phone down . . . let them keep talking . . . without my hanging up. I think this "may" discourage robo callers more than anything else because it wastes their time. When I hear the dial tone eventually . . . I then hang up. What do you think?

Simply don’t answer calls from numbers you don’t recognize. Let your voicemail screen your callers for you.

Many of you just have no concept of how hard things are for some people in this world today. Getting a job, ANY JOB, can mean the difference between keeping your home and feeding the family or NOT.
Very few, if any, telemarketers want t be sitting there taking calls but to make 8 or 9$ an hour they will do it.
The computer calls a number, if someone answers then the call is transferred to a person. Used to be a bunch of folks in a big room, now more than likely in their own home.
You have caller ID and an answering system so if you don't want to talk JUST LET IT RING.
Most telemarketers are not scammers, just folks that needed a job.

The calls are annoying. The caller who has interrupted your day is trying to make a living in what must be a very unpleasant experience for him or her as well.
Why make it worse?

Those people one gets to speak with on a robocall are probably a part of the scam. They know it is a scam and they also know it is illegal (at least in the USA) to robocall a cell phone. Simply tell one it is illegal to robocall a cell phone and see how fast they terminate the call. Has anyone ever responded in the positive to a robocall and received what was offered?

Have you been receiving telemarketer calls from a legitimate phone number? Most of them are spoofed numbers or numbers that are not really phone numbers. Spoofed phone numbers that come up with the name of a person are definitely not from a legitimate business.

My wife worked for a telemarketer many years ago and they did not spoof the numbers, plus it was a legitimate business that actually would provide the product being described to they buyer. And, they most likely do not work from home, the majority of them I have spoken with are difficult to hear because of all the background noise.

Quite the opposite the majority of the time. The great majority of the calls are scammers... they may be trying to make money, but at your expense. I for one am sick and tired of getting phone calls trying to sell me a warranty for a car I got rid of in 2013, telling me I won a trip to some wonderful destination, but I have to listen to an hour long sales pitch to buy into a time share located someplace I don't want to be.

Add to all those calls the spoofing calls that you get with a local name and number, the constant bombardment of unwanted phone calls is increasingly overwhelming. If my phone rings, and it does not come up with the name and number I have programmed into it of family, friends, doctors, or places I do business with, I don't answer it anymore. If they are not a scammer and are a legitimate caller, they will leave a message. 99.9% of the time, no message is left and they hang up after the third ring anyway.

It has nothing to do with being an ass. People are tired of unwanted harassment, which is what this is.

If you pick up a junk call, then you have contributed valuable info to the caller and the calling system -- that a live human will pick up at your number. I strongly suggest setting your cellular telephone to reject calls not in your contact list.

You can also register your telephone number at the government Web-site for do not call: https://www.donotcall.gov/

That is exactly what I do. If I don't recognize the number that is calling, I don't answer it.
If is important, they can leave a message.
If you answer an unknown number it gets recorded as a good working number and gets put on lists to be sold.

Even with things like NOMOROBO and the telephone provider apps, we still on occasion get junk telephone calls from companies trying to sell you something. So, rather than wasting the opportunity, I like to have some fun with these annoying folks. Just a few minutes ago, I get a call from some company trying to sell me solar panels.

BTW, I hope you remember Abbott and Costello's "Who's on First" routine. Here's how my call from the Solar company went:

Caller: We are offering you a way to cut your electricity bill with “Home Solar.” Are you the homeowner?
Me: No. (That was a lie.)

Caller: Who owns the house?
Me: Yes

Caller: The person who owns the house.
Me: Who

Caller: Is that a relative of yours?
Me: No

Caller: So what is the name of the person who owns the house?
Me: No, who owns the house.

Caller: That’s what I’d like to know…who owns the house?
Me: Yes

…and on and on it went…at some point, the caller got quite disoriented, and shouted out for a supervisor to come on the line. I didn’t wish to continue this with a supervisor with an American accent. So, I hung up, and related the call to my wife who got a big belly-laff. Then I hit the “call block” button on my phone.
