I continue on my selected route right next to the continuously winding coastline which brings new "Ahh" moments around each of the many bends in the road. The beauty of this coastline just cannot be adequately expressed. At the point of heading into Faskrudsfjördur I am now at the easternost part of my journey and very close to the easternmost part of Iceland. (Faskrudsfjördur is not marked on my map but it is just above Djupivogur, clearly at the easternmost point of my drive). Instead of doing one more loop around the last peninsula, I choose to take a relatively newly built tunnel for the final stretch to Reydarfjördur before heading into Egilsstadir.
EGILSSTADIR has a population of 2,500 and is the capital town of Austurland. It is a fairly young town, even by Icelandic standards, established only in 1947 as a service center for the region and is named after a nearby farm. It is located at a strategic point on the banks of the Lagarfljot river where the only bridge crosses the river and where all the main roads of the region meet, bisecting Route 1, the "Ring Road" on which I am traveling.

Neat!
(I found the tunnel on Google maps.)
Joe, another wonderful series. No guardrails, shoulders? A lot or little traffic? Thank you so much for taking all of us on this beautiful excursion.

Thank you Barbara for your appreciation! Guardrails and shoulders? - no - we have to remember that this is a sizeable country in area with just 350,000 inhabitants and all these road projets cost money - so I felt just lucky that most of the roads were asphalted. Very little traffic up here in the east and the northeast, so little in fact that I sometimes just put my car diagonal across the street to shoot right out of the window. I am very happy to have you along on this tour Barbara. Joe
You continue your excellent tour and I am happy to be along, Joe!
