I made a lot of collages before I learned the clipping mask technique. Using clipping masks is so much easier. In this example I designed the entire circle before separating it into layers for separate clipping masks. Unfortunately I deleted that first design layer. Then I added the picture layers and positioned them. I think I had in mind adding some strokes and added a blank layer for that. The strokes never materialized. As I worked each segment I grouped the three layers to keep my layers panel from becoming too cluttered. Finally I added the background image and merged all layers into one (just because I could. ) In this screenshot I have ungrouped the first panel for demonstration purposes.

Great topic, Linda with some great posts.

Great topic Linda! A while ago I made a bunch of multiple panel images for display in the elementary school where my daughter works. I'll attach one of the first ones I did (they got better as I went along) as well as a screenshot of a clipping mask template for 4 image panels.

If anyone here uses On1 Resize, there's also an easier way to build multiple panel images for print using the tiling feature.
Thanks so much Bill! I'm not quite understanding the ocean image. Can you explain a bit more about it, please?

An ambitious project IMO, Guy, with a beautiful result. Thank you for participating in the thread!

Nice collage. Good idea saving the design before putting the images in. I know you will correct the layer order when you put in the images.

Linda, love your blue flower image and a great topic for this thread. I design posters for a non profit and sometimes they want a white background, but I want to use color to draw attention to the text. So like Jim, I use a white layer, then a layer containing a thick font (with some effects) with my text, then a colorful image (this happens to be fall color) and a clipping mask. Thanks Linda, Jim, Minniev, and Bill for your examples and ideas. Bev

Hi Linda. The ocean image screenshot shows the multiple layers used to create the tryptic by using a clipping mask. I think this video explains it better than I could: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zt45IWLTrBs

Hope that's helpful.

From Minnie's idea:

- Bottom layer is a free texture (Old Barn Board) from Shadowhouse.
- Middle layer is just some masking I did quickly with one of my brushes. I used hard light blend mode after I placed the bunny. Changing blend modes can radically alter the look!
- Top layer is a bunny I photographed at the state park last week...

Wow, how cool does that bunny look now. If he only knew how wonderful he now appears. Nice job, Linda.

In your picture, you've got the large center picture on the bottom and the four smaller pictures overlapping it. But in your diagram of the layers you've got the large picture (image 3) in the middle. The large picture would overlap the two lower pictures but by moving that image layer and layer mask below layers 4 and 5 it would come out the same as your pictures. Something you would have figured out when you actually use this psd file.

Cheers. Some day I'm going to visit New Orleans. You must be right on the ocean.
