We put five coats of polyurethane on it but are now considering something a bit more durable. The previous counter was oak plywood and lasted 20 years - for some reason, maybe because the color wasn't so dark, scratches didn't show too badly. I'm using cutting boards for everything with this counter.
Yacht varnish Sue, many coats then cut back with a fine paper and buff up with machine, will look like glass and hard wearing
or
2 pack epoxy resin, pour and spread, will be rock hard and pretty scratch resistant

What you're seeing is the top of the stove that doesn't get polished - the rest of the body has a nice finish. It's an Elmira Stove Works "Oval" which is used for cooking and heat in the winter. I got it at an auction after a bidding war with an Amish farmer!
That's amazing! I have never, ever won a bidding war with an Amish farmer

The past two and a half months of lockdown have been quite the challenge for all of us, but thankfully, things are beginning to ease up and hopefully, will return to normal. During this time we've all had time to learn new techniques, play with Photoshop effects, and just take pictures. This challenge is an opportunity to show off what we've done with all that time. I'm looking forward to see what you've done!
I'll start out with pictures of our kitchen project which began at the beginning of the lockdown and entailed replacing the counter with walnut plywood, a new sink, new stonework behind the stove (no pictures of that yet), painting the base cabinets and replacing the framed pictures (both of which are still to be done).

Yup, your stove brings back memories. Very nice kitchen, my wife could be locked down it there and it would not bother her at all.

Problem is, I don't want a high gloss - it shows every little splotch and drip from every day use as well as looking too "plasticy". We're going to be checking out a product that is specifically for counters and is more of a satin finish. I'm hoping that it can be applied over the existing polyurethane - there's no way that I'm going to strip the counter again!!

There was a huge amount of adrenaline flowing - it was very exciting! BTW - I got the stove for $2200 - new models go for almost $6000 and are not as well made!

At least you were together, that's what counts!
Having our church closed for the duration affected us greatly as Chuck and I are heavily involved in our congregation. In addition to regular Sunday morning and evening services, all other church functions were cancelled - Kids' Quest, Bible studies, Session meetings, and Wednesday night prayer meetings. As with many other congregations around the country, technology came to the rescue with Zoom for meetings and a small group of us made YouTube videos of the Sunday service each Saturday. It was really strange watching our pastor preach to an empty sanctuary but ya gotta do what ya gotta do!
Great photos! I especially love the lighting in the photos!
Beautiful new kitchen too! Congratulations on a job superbly done, on both accounts!
Thank you for sharing.
