Yes, Nikon Cable release is $26.50 on Amazon and a wireless Bluetooth is also available.
I looked at the manual for the D3500 and I've concluded that the camera does not accommodate a wired remote release. I hope I'm wrong.

None is listed in the manual. I have one for my 3300, but the 3500 only lists snapbridge.
Don't get that camera. It's strictly amateur. You sound like too good of a photographer. Move up to the (Nikon) 7000 series as minimum.

Not even the wireless remote release from Nikon will work on the 3500? Shame because I quite like the ability to use it with my 5200.

No, the 3500 does not have that capability. It was removed for some reason in that camera. The 3400 down has it and the 7000 series has it.
Sounds like you are a retired pro. The 3500 is an entry-level camera as is the rest of the 3000 series. They're okay, but since you are a pro you may want to look at the 850, depending on your financial capability. 7000 series and 5000 series will run you about the same as the 3000. The 850 is a full frame camera the others are crop sensors. That's something else you might want to consider.
If there's a local camera store you can get to, I would go in with my list of needs talk to them get their suggestions Phillies camera make your notes go home and think about it. while you're at home thinking about it I'd look up b&h Photo see what they've got and maybe call them get their input.
Is there a local camera club you could go and visit talk to some of those people in person, look at their cameras, feel their cameras.

My Nikons still use that infra red clicker.

Nikon makes a wireless shutter release and there are a lot of 'aftermarket' versions on Amazon.
It's the size of a thin key fob and can release the shutter from the front or back.
Easy, cheap, and much quicker than the old thread in plunger shutter release I used on my old FM.
I bought a Vello remote release for my D5600 and it works like a charm. You can operate it from a hundred yards away from the camera or so. It is wireless and you can operate it from either side of the camera they say but I haven't tried that yet, nor have I tried it at 100 yards but I did try it at about 60 yards and it worked just fine. They include two cables with the set. Don't know if they make one to fit a D3500 but if they do you might look into . I got mine through B&H.

But they do not work on the 3500.
