That lens has .31x native magnification. Canon starts calling them macro at .5x., so I guess this is almost macro. With a 25mm extension tube it gets to .48x.

What’s nice is that you don’t have to get very close to get a closeup image. This really helps with something like the dragonfly. It won’t LET you get close.

Some people use a macro lens for closeup photography. During a photo contest in 2019, I found that my Canon 5DMk4 with a 100-400 II zoom and a 1.4 III extender gave me great closeups but left me ready to shoot my bird and animal subjects without a lens change.

I use my 100-400 in a similar way. It seems to give a better depth of field than using the macro lens. You also don't have to get so close to the critters so you are less likely to scare them away...

That you can zoom in on the frogs nose to see a tick says it all. I bet that tick was lunch! Great shots. Thanks for the tips also. I think I have that lens somewhere....

You have convincingly demonstrated the success of a technique I have occasionally used - your pics are very clever - and work well. Great Pics. Herewith one for you.

Really very nice, Rick. The shallow dof isolates the subject nicely too.
