And...the cost for getting all these choices compared to film is negligible.

More from my backyard. The red eyed bee/fly is about 1/4 to3/8 inch f40, iso 1600.
Fly is 3/8 inch f20 iso 800. Butterfly f20 iso800. The bug (I think stink bug, I’m sure I’ll be corrected) f40 iso 400. All with ring flash.

A little late, but I do appreciate your response! I'll try it soon.

Downloads are larger & have a lot more resolution. I copy Sippyjugs downloads & advice for future reference.

Some people use a macro lens for closeup photography. During a photo contest in 2019, I found that my Canon 5DMk4 with a 100-400 II zoom and a 1.4 III extender gave me great closeups but left me ready to shoot my bird and animal subjects without a lens change.

Excellent! I've done the same thing using my EF 70-300 on my Canon 80D, but usually for flowers rather than birds and insects. I've also done it from pretty close with the EF-S 18-135. Here are three examples, the first two were using the 18-135 from about 3 feet away, the first at 112mm, the second at 135mm. The third one was from a few feet away using the 70-300 at 300mm (equivalent to 480mm on my 80D).

Excellent as well! If you get a ring flash and use it For your closeups you will be even more amazed. The last shot looks like you may have used a flash. Keep it up.

Thanks Rick. I used the built in flash on the last shot. I took it with and without flash and preferred the one with flash.

I like the ring flash because it casts fewer shadows and is pretty controllable. I wish the one I have had high speed sync so I could capture more motion but I didn’t want to spend a lot for that feature. It’s not that important to me. I’ll use the Canon flash for those hummingbird shots if I don’t have enough reflected or direct sunlight. I need 1/8000 second and sometimes I need the fill too. Even with a battery pack I can’t get a fast enough recycle for a burst of 10 or so except when I use manual output. 1/8 power is good for about 6 shots.

I have the same equipment, but just had a brain fart. How close could I get by adding an extension tube? Might try that tomorrow.

This was a surprise. I haven’t had any activity on this post since May 2020. I use this lens with the extender all the time for closeups and then instantly for distant shots. I haven’t tried it with an extension tube yet. Take a couple of closeups and then whip up into a distance shot. I love it. This may not be the exact sequence, I don’t have those shots already processed, but I do it all the time.
