Some people use a macro lens for closeup photography. During a photo contest in 2019, I found that my Canon 5DMk4 with a 100-400 II zoom and a 1.4 III extender gave me great closeups but left me ready to shoot my bird and animal subjects without a lens change.

Remarkable captures. You found another approach to closeup photography.

I own that zoom lens. I may give your technique a try.

A great series. I really like the little spider on the cactus.

To anotherview:
I was amazed at how close the lens focused just with the 100-400. It focused even closer with the 1.4 extender attached. It was easy to hold the lens and rock into focus. I have many more examples.

If you enlarge the frog, you can see a tick on its nose. I didn’t see it when I took the shot.

I have been doing closeups with long telephotos since I got my first Tamron 150-600 when it came out. Then I added a 100-400L and then I traded both for the newer versions of each lens. I also have 1.4x and 2.0x extenders.
I do a reverse in that I will put a 1.4x on my 180 macro lens, put it on an aps-c body (angle of view of 403 mm) and sit in a lawn chair 6-8 feet from the humming bird feeders. Those little dare devils quickly regard you as part of the landscape if you are quiet and still - move slowly and smoothly. I have even had two playing "chase the birdie" use my head for a racing pylon so close I felt the air from their wings on my ear as they circled my head under the brim of my hat.

👍👍

Just my opinion, but the 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS II USM is the most versatile lens I’ve ever owned, which also makes it the best value lens I’ve ever owned.

To Robertjerl
when I first got the camera lens setup, I also experimented with hummingbirds. 1/8000, f7.1, iso 6400 FL 400mm. I only was shooting in .jpg so I didn’t have the control I have now. Pretty great lens.

I have the same setup, but struggle to get good photos! Yours are great. Were you on a tripod?
Ok, just went and looked at the downloads again, how the @#$ did you do that?! They are perfect in every way!

No tripod. Handheld. Manual.
Let me explain something. I was a professional studio photographer for 48 years. I retired 2 years ago. Up until the WIF photo contest in 2019, I had been treating the digital camera like a film camera. I shot in jpg only and didn’t take advantage of any of the tools available when you shoot in raw. Because I learned to shoot with a completely manual camera, I understand the exposure triangle. I try to go into a photo situation with the settings necessary already in my head and set in the camera. I had shot very few wildlife pictures. Mainly on vacation. This contest forced me out of my comfort zone and made me learn some of what the amazing digital camera and photo programs can do. Let me share the workflow I use now with you. I look at the raw shots in the program that comes from Canon. I use this for cropping, some color correcting, some noise control, and some sharpening. From here I save as a tif and use various Topaz labs programs to modify this tif. Mainly, I use AI Clear which is part of their studio package. There are many, many programs available from Topaz that do a fantastic job.
To get the wildlife pictures, I learned a lot about animal behavior and the best way to photograph them. Mainly, learned their comfort level for letting me get close and how to do this best. Sometimes camouflage sometimes just moving slow. The idea is to get closer so you don’t have to use a long lens you can’t hold up. Understanding the animal’s behavior also helps. What attracts them, what gets them curious. We were trying to get a red-tailed hawk to come out of a tree so we could get a shot and the noises we were making fascinated a bobcat. I was able to get this unintended shot just by paying attention...and being lucky.

I have used that same technique. I didn't get the great results you did. Great work.
