Thanks, traderjohn, for reminding me of that movie. I think I've seen it at some point and seem to remember a scene where Buck has to break the frozen sled runners free and then pull the sled to win his owner a bet.

Anyway, Netflix has it:

Loretta Young was the female lead.

I'm just curious as to why it wouldn't be for young kids?

Great movie. Not for young kids. Buck is an amazing animation!

I really enjoyed it. It more or less followes the Jack London story. I rented the 1935 Clark Gable movie the next day because that is what i mostly remembered. I would give the new movie an extra thumb up over Clark Gable. I really liked the Mail Delivery story. It really gives the original story a better flow. But that's just me. Mush on. BTW The Iditarod Dog Sled Race starts this month....

All the animals are computer generated. It's basically Harrison Ford in a cartoon

I was looking forward to seeing this adaptation of London's classic story, until I saw where the dog is CGI. Forget it. Not interested any more.

I enjoyed it very much. The CGI of the dogs was better than reviews had led me to expect.

This is definitely an adaptation. There are whole storylines and back stories that do not come from the book. It is a remix of events, for example rescues take place under different circumstances. In this PG and PC version, the call of the wild is romanticized into the call to run free and live wild, but it ignores the darker half – the call to kill bigger and better prey.

If you are a dog person, I think you will enjoy it. Good but not great.

With all the animal rights activists breathing down the back of the film industry you will be seeing a lot of this

No, the dog was real. It came from a town just north of where I live in Kansas.
The "pack" of dogs were animated.
About the movie. To me there was too much animation and not enough "real stuff".
Had a good story line however and yes I would say your children under 11/12 years old would enjoy the movie. I'm 79 and the movie was interesting.

The dog was computer generated. Starting to blur the lines of reality as your post admits.

In thirty years there will be a new Star Wars movie with Harrison Ford. He will be a 28 year old CGI "actor".
It is entertainment - not truth. I loved the movie "1917" and still do but I had some air let out of the bag by watching a documentary on the daily shooting of the highlight scenes. If you dislike Photoshop "creations" then the cinematography "tricks" will burst your bubble.
Such as the night scene where he is running and the flares keep going off casting shadows. The reality is the actor was shot in broad daylight and they added the "dark" look and all the light and shadows with CGI. I was impressed by the cameraman and found out the impressive part was a computer tech. And they are not the same in my book.

Saw the movie last night. This is a movie folks, not a documentary that must be true to a fault. It was a great movie in my opinion. Who cares if Buck was an animation, he was a great animation. I loved his facial expressions and actions. Harrison Ford did an excellent job. He talked to Buck just like he was a person which is what any true dog lover does. If you want to see a documentary don't go, if you want to see a fun movie, see it twice.

So what this really boils down to is do you want to see a movie that is true to Jack London's vision when he wrote this classic or do you want a highly commercialize modernized 21st century Buck Rogers CGI version that distorts to some extent the author's vision of his work? Remember, more young people will see the movie than read the book.

The wife and I went to see this movie Thursday. Anything with Harrison Ford is worth going to see. Yes, all the animals are CGI. And yes, the first few scenes are a little odd in their movements, and I was a little disappointed. But as the movie progressed, the animation quickly improved, and I began to enjoy the movie. I would say Buck is the Lead, Harrison Ford is the narrator and supporting cast. As far as Buck's facial expressions being overdone, we have a Red Healer who has a more expressive face. In fact, after the movie I told the wife that the lead animator must have a Red Healer at home. Because like ours, I knew exactly what Buck was thinking by watching his face.

As to how young an audience? That depends on how "protective" you are. I'd take most any child nine or older. I don't remember bad language. There are confrontations between people, people and dogs (including the use of clubs), and fights between animals. It's about life. Do you shield your children, or prepare them to carry on when you are no longer there?

If a friend asks if I want to go see it? I'm there. I think the wife has it pre-ordered. GOOD move!!! Go see it.
