If the story line doesn’t follow the book, it should have a different title.

Hollywood always corrupts originals, though they may be good works in their own right.

To see picture of the real Buck go to the book "Call of the Klondike" by David Meissner & Kim Richardson page 144. The real dog name was "Jack" The owner name Marshall Bond, was a friend of Jack London.

It's a good family film and our 11 old granddaughter saw it, she really liked it. At first I couldn't tell the dog and other animals weren't real. So I think they did a good job on the animals. Harrison Ford was great. I think it's a movie everyone can enjoy.

I read the book when young. I recall a very bad ending for the dog. That would make me very sad if the movie includes that. I would rather that they come over one last hill in desperation and there in front of them is a White Castle Burger..... but I am mixing movies here.

Great movie. Not for young kids. Buck is an amazing animation!

Buck was definitely animated. The movie was pretty good. Uplifting actually. And I don't know why it wouldn't be good for young kids. I would have taken mine in a second when they were small. Spoiler alert, there are no lightning bugs or wild boars in Alaska. Ford did a good job both as narrator and actor. No, it didn't follow the book very closely.

Quite a few years ago when there were stores that had movies on CD's for rent, they had Call of the Wild with Clark Gable I forget who the actress was. I thought that was a very good movie.
Most remakes tome always fall a little short. I am reminded of the saying; You can never cross the same stream twice.

We saw the movie yesterday and enjoyed it very much. It is loosely based on the original novel by Jack London, but the dog fighting part early in the book has been removed completely probably to make it more PC. There are some violent parts that might not sit well with younger children, but otherwise a good family movie. As for the animation, it is good mix, but not perfect by any means. However, I think it's good enough to not detract from the entertainment value of the movie. I have certainly paid to see worse movies than this one!

From the trailers it looks like "Buck" does not look true to Jack London's description of him. London described Buck's father as a 140 pound St. Bernard and his mother a Scottish Shepherd dog and remember that given the progression of the story, Buck had some wolf in his bloodline; probably more than the average dog. I like Darryl Zanuck's 1935 film version with Clark Gable, Loretta Young and Jack Oakie the best and, although it is in black and white, I think it would be very hard to improve on it. But, I will hold judgement on this new version.

A CGI dog, that's discrimination against K-9 actors they need work too.

Thanks, traderjohn, for reminding me of that movie. I think I've seen it at some point and seem to remember a scene where Buck has to break the frozen sled runners free and then pull the sled to win his owner a bet.

Anyway, Netflix has it:

Loretta Young was the female lead.

Marshall
