I downloaded the latest Apple update. What a mistake. I lost my Picasa photo rditor,my DVD player and others. I downloaded Luminar 4 but although it does a lot of good things it cant replace Picasa. So I am having the update removed and go back to 32 bit

How about Photos?

What I do is every time a major update comes along I put it on an external hard drive. So that way I don’t lose important programs in my current operating system. All you have to do is boot into whatever operating system you want to use. Some apps are just to important to lose or replace. Also, sometimes you can never find a replacement.

Kudos!! A sandbox! Thats the way to have your cake and eat it too!

There does come a point when you have to take a computer off the Internet to use an old system, just to be sure you don't pick up a piece of malware, virus, etc. that the old system isn't protected from.

I still have an image of a WinXP drive, and another image with Win7, but I won't leave my network active while running them. The same is true for drives with OS X versions 10.6.8, and 10.10.x.

Windows also has compatibility problems as versions change.

I have a MacPro with Windows 10 bootcamped on it. For a good while it was off-line and in need of repair so I used my wife's MacPro. I'm not sure what O.S. we even have running on it, but Sierra responds instantaneously. Windows and Firefox does not. It is, all in all, comparatively slow. BTW, everything is now current and up to date. My page keeps slipping and changing and I keep having to drag it to fill the screen. Sometimes the top toolbar is not visible at the top of the screen. So....bottom line, except for certain applications like storing photos, I may use the Apple OS to run my Mac.

Yes indeed!

I have a friend who uses a computer running DOS to generate CAD drill files for his business. Why spend money on new software and a new computer and spend time learning it all to get exactly the same output files? If you have a business and a tool that works, you like to keep it going as long as possible to maximize profits.

When I left Lifetouch, they were still using wide-area networked FoxPro databases that were well over 20 years old... That was a bit extreme! I would not want to do that today.

Generally, though, you're right... Use it 'til it dies, but have an alternative plan in place to replace it when it does.

It just makes cents ;) to keep the old equipment going and yes have a plan to replace if needed.
