Latest Mojave update should have corrected that.

I’m looking into an older MacBook, so I have 2 Quick questions. How old is your Mac, and were you able to call apple support?

It is generally not a good idea to buy a used MacBook Pro if it is older than Mid-2012. That model supports all recent Mac OS releases up to 10.15.3 (My twins each have them, upgraded to 16GB RAM and 1TB SSDs).

Virtually all Macs made in the last 20+ years are bootable from multiple hard drives. I have external hard drives with Systems 10.6.8, 10.10.x, 10.12.x, 10.13.x, 10.14.6, and 10.15.3. Each of these drives has some "obsolete" abandon-ware application on it that I need under certain circumstances. All of them run on my Late 2013 iMac. I also have a drive with partitions for Windows 7 and Windows 10 on it, and the Mac boots those just fine, using BootCamp. They also run in Parallels Desktop, so I can run MacOS and Windows simultaneously.

There are plenty of replacement applications for most of the abandon-ware apps. In some cases, alternative means of handling certain file types make more sense.

Making video DVDs, in particular, is less and less appealing, as 480P video generally sucks eggs in the age of 1080P and 4K. All my recent video is in the cloud, in private accounts on YouTube and corporate servers. However, I still keep a couple of DVD external drives around to play old DVDs of my kids growing up.

Although Apple hid the DVD player in MacOS 10.14 Mojave and 10.15 Catalina, they did update it to 64-bits and IT IS STILL THERE: https://blog.macsales.com/54441-catalina-quick-tip-how-to-find-and-open-dvd-player/ (Upshot: Just do a Spotlight search for it. You'll find it in CoreServices...)

I still have dozens of backup DATA DVDs containing files dating back to the 1990s. The operating system will still mount them and read them as it always has.

I cannot open WordPerfect 1.0 or Lotus 123 anymore.

Rolling on the floor laughing!!!

I'm sure there is someone who can make them run on a modern PC... Just to say they can.

Amazingly, there are folks who still run Apple II programs on a Mac: https://www.virtualii.com

Too bad they don't make it backwards compatible.

The hardware is, if it ran older software when new. Macs released AFTER the current OS are not backwards compatible with older versions of the OS, as has always been the case.

Thankfully, Apple does not LIMIT their new hardware by having it run older software. HOWEVER, you can get around that limitation by using Parallels Desktop Pro to run older versions of MacOS, OS X, Windows, DOS, Linux...

After I updated the MacOS I can no longer tether my Canon 7D II to my MAC. Now awaiting an update from Canon.

Two options:

> Dual boot from a partition running an older system or an external drive running an older system

> Run an older system on top of the newer system, using Parallels Desktop.

Appreciate the suggestions. Currently using my wife’s MacBook for the downloads and air dropping to my Mac. Will probably contact Canon for an eta before doing something outside my comfort zone.

No more support for me I use Windows 7 !! My old laptop is not compatible for Windows 10 which I do not want anyway. So EVERYBODY is in the same boat eventually no matter what system you use.

I run a copy of Windows 10 on my iMac, for ONE application to program my digital scanner radio. If the programming was available on a Mac I would ditch Windows completely ... I spent 22 years managing a network running DOS then Windows from version 3.0 up to 7 - I learned my lessons ;)

This happened to me yesterday. I decided to create a partition on my mac and install catalina. That was easy enough to do. I managed to import my photos library from high sierra to the new partition and it worked....amazing I thought.Today when I went into photos the normal way via high sierra it said I needed to upgrade photos to the latest version...which I knew for a fact doesnt work with high sierra. The resaon I installed it on a partition was because I knew that my versions of lightroom and photoshop were unlikely to work with catalina.
Anyway after a call to apple I used a time machine backup to restore the photos library in high sierra which is now working again.
I shall only use catalina for banking and surfing and continue to do my edits in high sierra.
Everytime I upgrade it turns into a nightmare but this may be the best way of dealing with it.

I think you are just setting yourself up for a nightmare again next time you upgrade. Make the switch to Catalina. Up grade all your programs. If a program won’t upgrade it is because the developer is not up to date and it is time to replace that program with something more up to date.
Fighting this upgrade will get you nowhere and in the end will only make everything harder.

Most people seem to replace their operating system with a later version but you don't have to, there is always the option to install to an external drive or to split an internal partition and dual boot.

With catalina probably an external drive will be a good option, they are using multiple partitions which makes things difficult if you have third party drivers in use. I have no desire to upgrade to Catalina the Sidecar feature only works with Gen6 and newer processors and other sidecar apps like astropad and duet will not work under catalina due to the new read only system partition... the other catalina issue is hardware support for nvidia cards...

Quite often you can run older applications on the new os simply by launching them from the applications folder of the older OS version.

A useful program is app cleaner most of an applications files are in the apps internal folders when you right click an app you can see its components (apples photo library looks like a file but in there are your original photo files), I digress.

But dragging an application on to app cleaner will give the locations of all of its files, which can be used to help you manually copy a program to a new OS.

If you are not installing to an SSD , a mechanical Hard drive will run about the same speed internally or externally so it really is of little consequence where you install your new OS.

32 bit applications will not run under MacOS Catalina.

I’m sorry that you found out after updating that your valuable 32 bit apps would not work.

I am curious to know the time involved to revert? What process did you use? Was it a success? Did all your apps work afterwards?

What I do is every time a major update comes along I put it on an external hard drive. So that way I don’t lose important programs in my current operating system. All you have to do is boot into whatever operating system you want to use. Some apps are just to important to lose or replace. Also, sometimes you can never find a replacement.
