I have never met anyone who owns a D750, and say they didn't like it. I attended an event in the past months, and spotted a woman photographer with a D750. She had a Nikon 24-70mm f2.8 lens on it. A lens she cherished. Even though the camera has only 24 megapixels, as compared to 45.7 megapixels on the D850. The D750 is still a favorite among full frame photographers. And the price has been considerably lowered for the holidays.

Google Nikon 750 vs 850......yes go get the 850. Don’t question it just enjoy it. I’m saying this because I enjoyed my Minolta xg...and my Nikon 810 but everything between wasn’t that enjoyable (rebel 300d, Nikon 7000)
It’s a nice tool you will enjoy 😉

If you go on the B&H site, you can compare the specs of the D750 and the D850 literally side by side. Both the D750 and the D850 have dual card slots. The D750 takes SD cards. The D850 takes and XQD card (VERY expensive compared to the closest equivalent SD card) and the other card slot takes an SD card (you should plan on buying the largest card wit which you are comfortable and the fastest write speed available). In both cameras, you can use just one slot. So no immediate need to purchase the XQD card right away if you decide to purchase the D850, unless you NEED the second slot for back-up. As others have mentioned, the files from the D850 can be huge, so you’ll probably need more ‘puter power!

Steve Perry, a member here, has an excellent youtube video on the D850. It’s fairly long, but full of excellent information. Just Google “Steve Perry D850 youtube video”. His site is Backcountry Gallery.

That you ask the question in that way suggests perhaps that you aren't hugely knowlegable about either, which is quite ok it's your perogative, your hobby. There are a bazillion YouTube videos which will compare them, some in enormous detail.

An even simpler answer: if you want the 850 - for whatever reason - and can afford it, then buy it.

In reality, only a tiny, tiny percentage of non-pro 850 users actually NEED everything the 850 offers.

People who don't truly need advanced equipment - not talking about photography only stuff here - but buy it anyway enable the items to be sold relatively cheaply to anyone.

Ferraris and their ilk are a perfect example:
Imagine for a moment, the number of people who NEED to go 170mph. Now compare that to the number of people who buy one because they just want one and can afford one.

I have an 850 simply because I enjoy using it. Of all the people on the site, I'd probably rank my skills in the bottom 25% percent. So what? I'm striving to improve, but photography isnt my primary hobby.

If you want it and can afford it, go for it. But do some research to make sure you actually DO want it - those huge files can be a PITA if all you are doing is taking snapshots for eBay!

I recently went through this same conundrum and decided to go ahead and upgrade from the D750 to the D850 – and I’m glad I did. For me, the D750 handled maybe 97% of the situations I wanted a DSLR for, but I tend to “over buy” to make sure that whenever I’m limited, the limitations are mine and not the camera’s. The D850 is a superb DSLR.

For me, the two principal advantages of the D850 over the D750 were:

• 2X the resolution - 45+ MPs vs. 24+ MPs. That's like adding an extra lens or two to your bag.
• Better autofocus system. The D850 uses the same autofocus system that the D5 has, and I've been very impressed with it.

But the D850 has several other features that appealed to me as well, e.g.:

• Faster shutter speeds
• Higher ISO range
• Better dynamic range
• 4K video capability
• Focus stacking
• Uses both XQD (amazingly fast) and SD cards

Did I “need” to updrade? Nope, not really – but I’m glad I did. There are a few other features and tweaks that the D850 has (i.e., a back-focus button) that I like a lot, but the main differences are the ones I’ve listed above.

Be forewarned that you won’t get much trade-in value for your D750. The market is flooded with used D750s right now, and the price on the remaining new D750s has really dropped. The strong rumor is that Nikon is coming out with a replacement for the D750 early next year.

Simply put, if it fits your budget, you won’t be disappointed with the D850. It’s a wonderful camera.

I made the jump from a D7100 to a D850; treated myself for Christmas when the D850 became available. I still shoot the D7100 and use it as a back up but have been thinking of passing it along and getting a D750 in its stead; still on the fence on that. As others have noted you will have to deal with large image files generated by the D850; I have had JPEGs over 30mb regularly. Someone "owed" me so I was able to get a 120GB XQD card which I use for back up and any video I shoot with the D850; otherwise I use Extreme Pro SD cards for stills. My decision was relatively easy; I print images 20" x 30" minimum so wanted all the resolution I could get. GOOD SHOOTING to YOU!

Ridiculous! We have all reached the point where we have "enough camera" and should just stop throwing money at the "latest and greatest." A few years ago when I was deciding between these two I determined that the D850 only did about 6 things that the D750 couldn't. I also determined that I didn't care about any of the 6.

Its so interesting and helpful to see everyone opinion. Its been a struggle for me to upgrade over the years. Went from Nikon Ftn to D100 to D300 and just finally a D700. That's were I'm stopping. I will now at 73 do my very best photography ever and concentrate on the best lens I can afford. Used of course. Not everyone can afford the latest and greatest but I know I have the very best camera I ever own and will do my best with what I have.

I would unhesitatingly support your decision to purchase a D850. It's an incredible camera.

That said a word of warning. You might have to upgrade your computer. The files are large and without a sufficiently fast computer, you'll be experiencing a frustratingly long processing session.

When did you buy the D750? If it's before the introduction of the D850 then yes. If it's after then no.

I can only speak from personal experience. I own and LOVE my D750. I looked at the Sony and Fuji brands but since I own so much in good Nikon glass it made sense to stay with Nikon. I thought about the Z6 or Z7 but in doing research, they aren't as good at BIF or other nature images as the D750, D500 or D850. So I tossed that out for now. Once Nikon improves the AF on the mirrorless then maybe. If I was only using a camera for travel, I would have switched to mirrorless but since I shoot a lot of sports and wildlife it came down to the D500 or the D850 as a second camera body.

My D750 is in for repairs because of the shutter issue, so I felt naked without a camera. I had recently sold my D700. So I finally purchased a slightly used D850.

Now, be very aware. The D850 feels MUCH heavier than the D750. It will take some time to get used to the extra weight. I never thought it would feel that much different.

Also, the focus system acts very different than the D750 in certain modes and the camera wants to decide where to focus unless you stay in single point and decide how many focus points you want. Ive only had the D850 for a week or so and I'm still learning and getting used to all the different ways the focus system works. It does focus faster than the D750. Is it worth the difference in cost, idk, but it is faster.

Despite the D750 having good dynamic range, in using the D850, it sure seems better than the D750. For landscape, I would think that will come in handy.

If you are on a strict budget, stay with the D750. Me, I enjoy photography a great deal and have been saving for the D850 since it came out. I have NO buyers remorse. I do think its an upgrade in the short time Ive been using it, but the D750 never stopped me from taking excellent photos.

The way I see it, I spend money on my fish tank and my camera gear. I don't spend money on much else other than every day things needed to survive. So photography makes me happy. If it makes you happy and $2800 wont break the bank, get it. If photography is a now and again thing for you and youre happy with the D750, buy a new lens.

Here's a pretty detailed comparison. With your years of experience, this should answer most of your questions.

D850 has two card slots, one takes XQD card, one takes SD card.
