Where did you find that program "Fences"? Looks like something I could use.

Unfortunately, that might not work. I had just about the same problem. The icons would move, and the resolution would change with every start-up. Someone recommended getting a free program called Fences. I got it, and it works nice, but my Desktop still changes one way or another with every start-up.

My Vista machine always boots up at very low resolution. When I try to change it, it says that it can't go any higher. If I wait a few hours, I might be able to get better resolution.

My wife just got an iMac, so when I learn it and teach her how to use it, I think I'll be moving to Apple country. Actually, we already live in apple country - apple orchards all over the place.

Every new version of Windows is introduced as head and shoulders above the older one - the one that everyone knew wasn't very good. Apparently, they keep introducing bad versions of Windows, promising that the next one will fix all the problems.

Right-click anywhere on a clear part of the desktop. Select "View." Then uncheck "Auto Arrange Icons."

I believe that if you will right click on your desktop there will be an option in the popup box that will let you lock the desktop, this will keep the icons in their original place.

Sorry JerryG

You are probably one of the folks that put every program icon on the desktop.

I do it this way.

I right click the desktop/ new / Folder

I name the Folder UTILITIES ( all my utilities go in here )

I right click the desktop / new / Folder

I name the Folder ( PHOTO STUFF ) ( all my photo programs go in there )

I right click the desktop / new / Folder

I name the folder ( GRAPHICS ) ( All my graphics go in there )

I end up with maybe 5 or 6 folders and my Computer and Recycle Bin on the desktop.

Each MAIN FOLDER like the one I have named LEE contains specific FOLDERS inside it for specific items.

My main desktop remains relatively clean and if the icon locations get messed up, I only have a couple to move where I like them.

Sarge, have you hears of the desktop organizer program called Fences? I tried it and is a pretty good program. With it one can organize all programs into groups or turn off icons simply by double clicking on the desktop.

Look back one page, and you'll see a screen shot of my Fences. I love it.

I have used many versions of Windows, and am very particular as to the arrangement of my desktop icons. As suggested by Elliot Design, right-click on an empty spot on the desktop, select View, and uncheck Auto Arrange Icons. They will stay put. Sometimes if you update an application its icon will move to an open part of the desktop, but it is easy to put it back where it belongs, especially if you have align to grid checked. To help recover icon locations in case they do get scrambled, I do a Print Screen and then paste the result into Paint and save an image file of the desktop. Then I know how the icons were arranged.

Why keep all of those icon on your screen? I'll bet you don't use most of them on a daily basis.
Decide on what icons that you don't often use.
Right click on those and hit delete. that does nothing more than remove the icon.
if you want the icon back on the screen, find the program and right click on it. Go to (send To) and click on desktop.
Why not have a nice picture on you screen, that's not hidden with icons. I have three computers that run on Windows 7. None of them have the problem that you have described. You also must be careful when you download new programs, they often add more than one icon to the screen. Recently I downloaded a program that added three icons. Sometimes after doing reserch I discover a unwanted icon has been added to my screen. If you really want to keep your computers running properly, I suggest you try, System Mechanic Pro. They'll let you try it for thirty days. http://www.iolo.com

The problem I have with putting lots of stuff on the desktop is that it is on the desktop, i.e. underneath any program you run. What a pain!

If you right click on the taskbar, and then click on toolbars, then click on desktop, you will have access to all the desktop icons and folders. After that just click on the double arrows >> beside the word desktop to see your new menu without clearing the current screen.
