When Woody Woodpecker starts chewing on your house, trees, yard chairs etc he will still be pretty but less welcome.
Sorry to hear that!
I have downy, hairy and pileated woodpeckers by the dozens. Not ONE has EVER attacked my house or any of my out-buildings (3). They all prefer suet over the side of a house. It's the quickest way to get them to forget the man-made structures. Is it foolproof? No.
Great picture. I think they are very pretty. But they also can damage thing. Our old cabin with wood siding they made holes all the way through into the garage. We put steel siding on it.
No one has commented on the fence post?
Put him on a tree!
Nice shot! We've lived here 25 years and just three years ago a pileated showed up at our dead pine tree stump in front. Last year he pecked a cavity into the base of the tree, then moved over to the sawn crotch to find more tidbits, probably carpenter ants. If he does that too much more, the base of the tree will be gone and the tree will fall over. He's an efficient lumberjack, chips flying everywhere.
Who likes The Pileated Woodpecker? I do, I do! But definitely destructive to wood structures. I used a pellet gun or a slingshot to chase them away from structures when I lived in Washington. Great shot! Yeah, he needs to be on a tree branch!
Very NICE ! - thanks for sharing

I can see you're not familiar with pileated woodpeckers!
You take your shot whenever it's available.

Before I moved to Wisconsin, I would occasionally see a pileated fly by but never close enough to get a really good view so, most of my knowing what they looked like was from books.
I have been feeding birds in my yard for a few years and I now have a male pileated visiting my suet feeders 2 - 3 times a day. I was also lucky one day to see a female and two males all at one time. I think one of the males was their baby but, he wasn't that small so, it was just a guess.
Hope you enjoy my photo as much as I enjoy seeing these magnificent birds.
