Before I moved to Wisconsin, I would occasionally see a pileated fly by but never close enough to get a really good view so, most of my knowing what they looked like was from books.

I have been feeding birds in my yard for a few years and I now have a male pileated visiting my suet feeders 2 - 3 times a day. I was also lucky one day to see a female and two males all at one time. I think one of the males was their baby but, he wasn't that small so, it was just a guess.

Hope you enjoy my photo as much as I enjoy seeing these magnificent birds.

Excellent detail on the bird and the background blur is very nice.

Great Shot. Cool Woodpecker. As far as I know we don't have those woodpeckers in California. We have Acorn, Downey, Lewis', Northern Flicker, Hairy, and others. The only one with large amounts of bright red is the Red-breasted Sapsucker.

When Woody Woodpecker starts chewing on your house, trees, yard chairs etc he will still be pretty but less welcome. Every Spring a pair comes out of my woods to the house and they will eventually kill a maple tree. Oh I got some nice images and was excited. Now I wish they would stay in the deep woods.

Beauty.
We have one who attacks a dead tree behind the house regularly.. It sounds like someone firing a machine gun out there.
