I am on the staff of WHFC radio 911 FM community radio and we have an old time radio show every saturday morning. We play almost all of the great shows from from mysteries to comedies and old TV shows as well.

You can hear them on the internet at WHFC911.org. It starts at 9:00 Eastern Standard Time

I watched Ken Burns' PBS series on country music, and I was struck by how early country music was spread by radio superstations which could reach a large part of the country with broadcasts like the Grand Ole Opry and other country programs.

I purchased this disk on ebay. It contains about 93,000 old radio shows. Most of the cost is for the hard drive.

theradiolady.com has a HUGE inventory. She is famous for great service and frequent mark-down sales.
I have bought from her for years.

YES, I was born in 1936, and how well I remember radio. We had a big "Atwater-Kent" upright. And I used to lay in front of it, propping up my chin with my hands and listening to all the afternoon serials. Hell, I was a full-fledged member of "Tom Mix's straight shooters." LOL.

Even now, in the car I have the old time radio station and listen to the shows like, "Yours truly, Johny Dollar," "The Lux Radio Theater," "I Love a Mystery," Etc... Soooo many programs.

I like those old radio shows. If you have a chance to see the TV series "Remember WENN," take a look. It's about a radio station in the 1930s. Unfortunately, it has not been released for sale.

I used to listen to OTR on my commute into NYC; my favorite was Sherlock Holmes with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. The best and most comprehensive free site to download shows I found was: https://archive.org/details/oldtimeradio

Thanks for the link, Bill!! My first memory of "Old Time Radio" was Roosevelt's broadcast of the attack on Pearl Harbor. I was 4.

Born in 1928, I also had a great appreciation for AM radio - and shortwave. I had a Zenith "portable" (suitcase size), and later, a Hallicrafters S40, and spent many nights finding stations around the world (instead of doing my homework). There were many good programs on AM in those days. Favorites included "Information Please", with Oscar Levant, Franklin P. Adams and John Kieran, all incredibly knowledgeable on almost all subject matter; "Gunsmoke, with William Conrad, Howard McNear and Parley Baer - perhaps the first program to make extensive (and very effective) use of sound effects; and "The Jack Benny Show", with the greatest comedian of all time, Dennis Day, Eddie Anderson and Mel Blanc. There were, of course, many other great programs.

Howard McNear was great. He was not only "Doc" on Gunsmoke, but played Floyd the Barber in Mayberry on the Andy Griffith TV show https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howard_McNear

"Johnny Dollar" was the last show I remember hearing broadcast on local radio. It was a Sunday night just before the first day of the 1962-63 school year. I was starting the 10th grade and feeling very grown up to be out of junior high. Funny how some memories hang around so long.

Get those old Zenith radios fixed, plenty of people out there to repair them and then enjoy old time radio on an old time radio! For modern radio enthusiasts you have iheart, tune-in etc. But, best of all is the Radio Garden app. Hundreds, perhaps thousands of stations you access by rotating a world globe to the country, city etc. that you want. I find it fascinating. Good luck.

Got to thinking. I wondered if it was still around so I did a quick search for old time radio on the internet and there are many places that still provide old time radio, just in case you are interested. All free of course. www.oldradioworld.com

Great revival of my favorite shows. My favorites were: Superman, The Green Hornet, Jack Armstrong, Nick Carter, The Shadow, The FBI, Jack Benny, Amos & Andy and others.
Thanks,
Mark
