Anybody else but me able to remember the golden days of radio?
theradiolady.com has a HUGE inventory. She is famous for great service and frequent mark-down sales.
I have bought from her for years.

Not first run, but being from rural Appalachia at a rather high altitude and little interference back then I listened to many of the great shows in rebroadcast from small stations across the south east.

My rig started out with a crystal set and a wire I slipped out my bedroom window and ran it to a wire fence intersection.

Depending on the skip, I could easily pick up Saint Louis at night.

As I started earning newspaper money and such I upgraded a used ZENITH TRANS-OCEANIC MODEL Y600 multi band that opened up the world.

Nice site you linked to also, thanks for sharing.

I do not know what the golden days of radio are, but I used to listen to radio a lot, til I came to this country. Then I stopped, because it did not matter what station one listened to, they played the same songs over and over, and the next day, they just repeated the same shit. Back home, you could listen to the radio a whole month and never heard the same song twice.

Born in 1945 I remember radio show very well. That would be AM only. Than in about 1966+ or - FM can into it own. At the same time I got into listing to shortwave to find out what was going on in the world. I have a RCA's two band radio(AM & shortwave.) made in 1941 it tabletop model, real wood case. Found that a yard sale. Also have a Zenith H 500 model, I pick up at local auction. One problem both radio do not work. But both are nice to look at and think of another time.

Boy, does this bring back memories. I was raised in central Utah, in the sticks in those days and during the early 50' my brother and I acquired an old AM/Shortwave radio. It was large radio in a console. Our parents did not want it anymore so we were the benefactors. We set it between our two beds in the bedroom and it had side pockets just right for a collection of old comic books. We hooked up and outdoor antenna. We spent many a night scouring the airways for different stations. We had a map of the US tacked to the wall and when we would find a new station the map was plugged. We even found some on the east coast when the conditions were right.

The Golden Days would be the pre-TV years when radio was filled with audio programming equivalent to today's TV drama, comedy, adventure, etc. "Theater of the Mind" is a common expression.

Born in 1928, I also had a great appreciation for AM radio - and shortwave. I had a Zenith "portable" (suitcase size), and later, a Hallicrafters S40, and spent many nights finding stations around the world (instead of doing my homework). There were many good programs on AM in those days. Favorites included "Information Please", with Oscar Levant, Franklin P. Adams and John Kieran, all incredibly knowledgeable on almost all subject matter; "Gunsmoke, with William Conrad, Howard McNear and Parley Baer - perhaps the first program to make extensive (and very effective) use of sound effects; and "The Jack Benny Show", with the greatest comedian of all time, Dennis Day, Eddie Anderson and Mel Blanc. There were, of course, many other great programs.

I listen to more radio than watch TV now that I've retired. But I can't listen to BBC R4 in the car, I get to absorbed to concentrate on what I'm supposed to be concentrating on.

The BEEB used to be the gold standard in news reporting.

What is if the BEEB isn't. I realise we were lucky in years past with the byword in News reporting standards (both on Radio and TV) and I know it's gone downhill since the Government started using the license fee as a bargaining chip in various negotiations.

We all pay a license fee for the BBC of around £155 p.a. for advert free broadcasting and I for one want to see that money ring fenced and raised inline with inflation so they can't be 'bullied'.

I like a lot of their collaborations with W.G.B.H. (Boston) and I like their sports presentation. If it doesn't need to be said, don't say it - let the cameraman do the work. I don't like the continual banter we get with the Wembley NFL games played here.

Today, there is no gold standard IMHO ... but let’s keep politics out of the thread.

Can you get XM radio there?

A large number of the old shows are rebroadcast.

I used to listen to OTR on my commute into NYC; my favorite was Sherlock Holmes with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. The best and most comprehensive free site to download shows I found was: https://archive.org/details/oldtimeradio
