Windows has me frustrated since XP. I'm seriously considering to only use the windows platform isolated from internet and only use tab & android device to be online.

I have a really old software (Alpha 4 which is a Dos based software) that I need to use for its database program. I’ve been using this program for nearly 30 years and it will only run on the XP version as the latest update. I have disconnected it from the internet to prevent it from updating to a later version of Windows. That computer is only used for the one database program for the past several years. For all of my other computer work I have been using an IMac for the past 5 years.
I tried running the XP Windows on the IMac, but experienced issues with some functions of the database not working correctly.
So the windows computer is only used for the database program only and does not get updated.

If you've been having issues with updates and if your system allows it, I'd recommend delaying installation of updates by a few days.

I had mine set to delay for 30 days. I just checked, and the system now doesn't allow that setting... You have to tell it what date to start updating again, so you would have to do this every month to keep the delay. Also, the delay 7 days option is only until a set date, not a global 7 day period.

This makes it more of a pain to avoid the updates...

Agreed. With every update something gets misplaced or lost. They work under the pretense that the customer will debug the program, thus they do not need to, that has been since day 1 with Microsoft and it has not gotten any better. I use it and I hate it. Linex is much better and is stable, just have a bit of a learning curve. Maybe something to consider

After hearing all of the Windows 10 update horror stories, I've decided that to protect the information that I have on my stable Windows 7 Pro Lenovo Ideacentre is to not upgrade it to Windows 10 and risk losing programs that will not run on Win 10. My solution is to buy a new Lenovo desktop, Windows 10 Pro and use the new computer for online and run the other one offline and keep everything important on that one along with the older programs that I don't want to lose. My only problem is that I presently run (2), 4 year old Acer monitors that I can't figure out how to configure so that I can use them for both computers, but not at the same time. I'm sure there is a way of doing it without having to unplug them from computer #1 and then plug them into computer #2 each time I want to switch computers, but the how-to is way above my pay grade. If any of you UHHers out there know how to accomplish this, I'd be grateful for the solution. I'm an old dog and learning Linux would be a bit much for me. I've been warned away from it by experienced computer programmers.

An update on a computer with Windows 10. I keep off so no "bugs" can enter took 6 hours to install and restart, other two computers I leave on and had no such problem. Now I'm afraid to see what all it deleted and destroyed.

I’ll opt to be the contrarian here and mention that I’ve had zero update issues on the multiple Win 10 machines that I use. A few observations:

1) Since most updates are updates to virus/malware definitions, it’s in your interest to download and install them, although I have my machine set to delay 30 days for any bugs to settle out. I would just add that Professional IT organizations always patch their aps and OS, and many shops have a patch manager that handles them
2) if you have Win 10 home edition, you don’t have a choice - you can delay the updates, but not turn them off. If you have the pro edition, you can delay them indefinitely.
3) if you schedule the updates at night when you’re asleep, you never notice them - they’re done when you come in.
4) Expecting MS (or any other company) to validate every update with every possible SW application and HW configuration is unrealistic - it’s just not possible to try every possible configuration in the hundreds of millions of users.
5) your options are Apple, which will cost you 2X for equivalent performance and have limited upgradability (and Apple is constantly updating as well, with their own upgrade issues which you can read about on UHH over the last few weeks) or Linux, which is good tight code, and fairly secure, but you may find limitations in what aps are available or in using your current aps. You pays your money and takes you choice - there is NO perfect OS.

Yes, good methodology.... and "cleaning" out all the crap that builds up quickly with an active internet machine, on a weekly basis - keeps my win10 running well. Do I like all the updates, NO, but my processes keep things running smooth.

For those thinking of keeping their Windows computers offline, another option for browsing is a Chromebook. I've been enjoying one for several years. The only tiny inconvenience is if I edit a photo on my laptop, I need to copy it to a thumb drive and then insert to the Chromebook for uploading to UHH. It's really no big thing, though, once you get used to the idea

I've often thought the same about the Chromebook for some things, and my desktop for others!! May try that route some day soon.....

I too have a couple of dedicated XP machines that were painful to replace because of HW considerations, but I offer this caveat. Recently, one MB went belly up, so I pulled out a spare and did a fresh install of XP SP3, and then the trouble started. Neither any version of Firefox, Chrome or any version of IE would not allow access to secures sites (and almost every site, including Google, is now https). Turns out the CPU wouldn’t support one of the newer security protocols. I screwed with this for two solid weekends including registry hacks and never could get the machine stable. Finally said screw it and set up one of my rarely used Win 10 laptops and built a new HW interface. Instant gratification. The moral is you better keep that old XP machine working, because if you have to replace it, things such as internet security and browsers have come a long way since 2002 (the date on the XP SP3 disk), and you typically need internet access at least occasionally, even on a dedicated machine.

I received Windows 20 update and clicked ok. A bout a half hour later I went to download my pics from my camera. My usual windows did not open Searching for photos in EOS Device.
It just opened K drive but no pictures???
Finally I found them in Goggle backup. This was very frustrating and getting them back on to my external hard drive from Google is not easy. Everytime there is an update, something goes wrong!

Windows 20? Goggle? K drive?
The question here is what are you talking about?

A Windows update is not likely to have anything to do with how photos are getting to a Google Drive and being missing from your camera. You need help with your computer use, and describing your problem.

I have to second another poster's comment.... I have never had problems with Windows 10 updates. Been using Win 10 since it came out. Multiple computers....desktops and laptops. All Dell models.

I do have to say that, from seeing people online all over looking for help, and talking to computer service professionals, that HP computers seem to have a lot more trouble with Windows updates than all other brands.

You are not alone, Chris! I have had almost no issues with Win10 since I installed it within 2 weeks of its initial 2015 offering from MS. I did experience one problem about a year ago, but that was resolved. It was my inadvertent error that created the problem. I love Win10. I also have my PC running 24/7 with an occasional restart. Mine did the recent update last week while I was sleeping. I empathize with those who experience difficulty. It's no fun.

I installed Windows 10 the first day it came out on the internet and it has been great, best OS yet. I leave my computer on 24/7 and let it update its self, never a problem drivers or updates. I called it my ebay computer, because I bought everything from ebay and
built it myself, it is a great computer.

You need a KVM switch. It will allow you to switch your monitor (and keyboard and mouse if you wish) between different computers.

I agree 100%. Windows 10 is the most stable OS yet. I don't have ANY problems on my 3 computers.

If you have an IT nerd in the family or friend have them get you a Linux system. Looks like Windows but open source and works better.

A couple of people have asked about the Win 7 menu emulator for Win 10 that I had mentioned previously.

It is "Start10" by Stardock Software and costs about 10 bucks - https://www.stardock.com/products/start10/

Win 10's tiles are all gone and the menu looks and functions exactly as it did with Win 7 with a few functional improvements.

The Win 10 tiles system is the only part of Win 10 that I really don't like, and for my purposes Start10 does a wonderful job.
