No, that is not what I was saying or inferring. Maybe I was not a clear as I could have been. People who are educated and well spoken are often demonized as full of themselves or overly proud by those who have not achieved the same level of education. I do not condone such behavior. However, I believe this a defense mechanism used by those who have not attained the same educational level as others in order to level the field in their minds. There are many examples of this in the history of politics. One of the well-known example is Adlai Stevenson. He was a brilliant thinker and the Republican party portrayed him as an egghead, nerd in today's terminology. He was an eloquent speaker....

The ordeal of the twentieth century – the bloodiest, most turbulent age of the Christian era – is far from over. Sacrifice, patience, understanding, and implacable purpose may be our lot for years to come. ... Let's talk sense to the American people! Well as the son of someone who was miner I can safely say that I don't think he wants to kill the coal mines. I think he wants to make the owners of the mines and the users of the coal more responsible. The mine owners have brainwashed their workers into thinking the mines will close and they will not. On the contrary, the operating standards will be improved. The coal mine operators in this country are lying to their workers, this is not new. The mine operators don't want to invest in the mines they just want as much from their workers and the earth as they can get and damn the consequences.
quote=dirty dave just a thought here in the last ... (show quote)

Perhaps these Democrats are also brainwashing mine workers, or lying to them.

Cecil Roberts, president of the powerful United Mine Workers, an affiliate of the AFL-CIO, after EPA administrator Lisa P. Jackson made a ruling against coal plants. “The Navy SEALs shot Osama Bin Laden in Pakistan and Lisa Jackson shot us in Washington,” Roberts said.

West Virginia Democratic Senator Joe Manchin, a member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, put it another way, saying the EPA “is fully engaging in a war on coal…” Manchin went on, “this ill-advised proposal to prevent new coal-fueled generation will move this country away from using all our domestic resources, and I will fight it every step of the way.”

The big news is not only that Democrats like Manchin and Roberts are rejecting the Obama policy, but that an Obama-appointed judge, Amy Berman Jackson, recently ruled that the EPA exceeded the agency’s authority and violated federal law when it revoked a coal mining permit in Logan County, West Virginia.

Another Democrat, West Virginia Governor Earl Ray Tomblin, issued the following statement regarding the Obama Administration’s proposed EPA guidelines:
“This move by the EPA can lead to only one conclusion—the Obama administration is trying to end the use of coal as we know it. This regulation will devastate West Virginia and our region by reducing jobs and unnecessarily increasing the cost of power for our citizens. I will not stand for it. This latest announcement is yet another example of the EPA’s inappropriate use of its regulatory authority to set policy for our country. Those decisions reside within the Congress, not an unelected bureaucracy. Even though a federal court last week told the EPA that it was acting beyond its power, the EPA continues to act beyond its authority and in a short-sighted manner that will hurt our economy and cost our country jobs. I will continue to vigorously defend our great state against the EPA’s overreaching, ideologically-driven policies that threaten to kill coal. We should be working to make our country more energy independent and create jobs, not harm them.”

I believe President Obama is trying to eventually shut down the US coal mines by using executive orders and the EPA's zealot Ms. Jackson. 8-)

For the most part they are closed minded and stubborn. They know what they know and you will not change their mind (even if what they know is proven to be false). I thank my lucky stars for everyday that I do not have to be there in that atmosphere of stubborn ignorance (except on holidays). The population is very old, I believe that after Florida, Pennsylvania has the oldest demographic in the nation. These older folks are the ones that worked in the mills and factories and didn't put away a lot of money so the stay there in their homes in the cold...not enough money to retire to a warmer climate. Again...............another meaningless statement. We were speaking about the coal industry. Many are cutting back production, laying people off, or cutting shifts. That means less people working, and higher electric bills. There has been a comapny here that has been our customer for 30 years. A little of 3 years a go we sold, and installed 10 new offices because they expected to hire. Those offices have never been filled. In fact, as of Oct 15, they are shutting the doors. About 800 people lossing jobs. Some have a choice to pick up and move to the headquarters in Virginia. The one coal company that is thriving here is 100% export, they are growing by leaps and bounds. Their biggest customer currently.............China. You know, that place where they have ZERO enviormental restrictions. Good thing they built over dome over China, so that pollution won't impact us. This is just some of many stories.

Back to Pittsburgh. Glad you left!!!! I love this city. I have rarely ran into the people you desribe as ignorant. Why was this city voted "Best place to live." like 5 out of the las 10 years? Maybe you were the problem. Everyplace is going to have it's share of assh&%les.

No, that is not what I was saying or inferring. Maybe I was not a clear as I could have been. Observations:

Why would failure to answer your alleged 3 of 4 questions be insulting to you or anyone?

RixPix didn’t ignore you. Your first sentence was a statement but with a question mark. Your second sentence asked for a definition and RixPix again gave that. Your third sentence was I’ve-got-my-eye-on-you: an attempt to intimidate with the bonus insult of calling RixPix “kitty”.

Interesting that RixPix’s experiential beliefs about levels of education and how some people react means he is stifled in personal growth and maturity but your life lessons, conclusions and beliefs don’t.

Assuming you do care about the issues and are trying to correct faulty beliefs and win converts; is making bald, insulting, unsupported, inaccurate statements an intelligent response to things you disagree on?

Do you believe that… you, I guess… the "under educated" possess a more valid real life experience and are thus superior to the "educated"?

You assess RixPix and his Adlai Stevenson quote as being self-inflated and meaningless. I suggest you fail to understand either the content or the context of his reply.

And what is this continuing fascination with illusionary acts of masturbation to support your position?

Nothing about the “human condition”… the humanities… disgusts me. But there are some human behaviors that dismay me.

Good luck to you, sir. I feel your frustration.

"When the tumult and the shouting die, when the bands are gone and the lights are dimmed, there is the stark reality of responsibility in an hour of history haunted with those gaunt, grim specters of strife, dissension, and materialism at home, and ruthless, inscrutable, and hostile power abroad. The ordeal of the twentieth century – the bloodiest, most turbulent age of the Christian era – is far from over. Sacrifice, patience, understanding, and implacable purpose may be our lot for years to come. ... Let's talk sense to the American people! Let’s tell them the truth, that there are no gains without pains, that we are now on the eve of great decisions."

The working class thought him aristocratic and he lost the election to "everyman" type IKE.

Your inability to answer 3 of the 4 questions I posed to you is insulting.
Your thinking that people who are"educated" can make assumptions/judgments about your perceived"under educated"has stifled your personal growth and maturity.
The so called "under educated"have one upped you through
real life experience.
Your self-importance is exemplified by your meaningless tangent and quote you went off on.
You again masturbated in writing in public to titillate yourself.
You represent the disgusting part of the"human condition".
Good luck.

Thanx for joining the ...errr...conversation.

Without the asking and answering of questions you can't have a conversation. It would be a lecture, speech, poetry reading...
I had an attorney and doctor for parents and had to deal with their associates and friends.I was always amazed at the different ways a person would choose to not answer a question.

No I disagree,it is in the form of a question, your missing the inflection.

Please show me where he defined"under educated" in relationship to"educated"in relationship to"over educated"?

I can't comprehend or imagine where you got"I've got an eye on you".I'll need help on that one please.

The "kitty" was an obvious failed attempt at humor.RP's avatar is that of a cat and gender-less.

Your sentence starting with"interesting" doesn't make sense to me.

Your sentence starting with"Assuming".I'll say no.Just trying to get a light bulb to go off some where to be nice and less condescending.

Your sentence starting with"Do".I'll say your wrong.I'm probably in the undefined"over educated"category.

The next sentence starting with"You".To me it was an attempt to answer the question with a metaphor hidden in this quote. It did not answer the question. You should be able to see that.

Have I been masturbating my mind in writing in public too?I apologize.

I guess almost lastly,I think we are using different definitions, but
unfortunately we can't control that.

Good luck to you.I found this quite refreshing.Thanx.

Sorry if my post came across as a lecture.
So much to reply to! We’ll try them in order and endeavor to be terse.

Yes, our politician’s failure to give simple and direct answers is frustrating. Many examples abound but Charles Durning in Best Little WH in Texas plays it out nicely… http://videosift.com/video/Best-Little-Whorehouse-in-Texas-Dance-a-little-Sidestep

When I read your first sentence I did not “hear” a voice rising at the end to indicate a question and judged the ? to be a typo. If you remove the ? and read it again, you might agree.

Page 4, Sep 4, 12 19:57:42,
“I guess when people read and become educated they can be viewed as proud of their accomplishments and full of themselves.”
That seems straight forward.
“Those that feel the need to[p] point out this pride are often at the other end of spectrum...under educated and envious of the success of others.”
While not a Merriam-Webster entry, it seems a fairly clear belief/observation. I understood.
As to “over educated”… I think that was your word choice from Page 5, Sep 5, 12 00:43:15.

You don’t think that “You have my full attention now kitty” especially coming at the end a paragraph that says, in effect, justify your stand, isn’t meant to be just a tiny bit intimidating… or a dare maybe? The only time you refer to RixPix by name, you call him kitty. I could probably write a dissertation on that alone.

I thought “interesting” was self-explanatory. RixPix relates a conclusion based on his life experiences. Your assessment based on your experiences seems to be that others (the under educated) have one upped with a more valid “real life experience” that invalidates RixPix’s.

I did clarify the “Do” sentence with “you, I guess” as I wasn’t sure which class you assigned yourself to due to the “one upped” comment. Yes, you do appear to be knowledgeable and literate. Over educated? Perhaps if one was referencing the needs of a specific job, etc.

The next sentence starting with “You”. I saw the quote only as an example of the type of rhetoric that the “under educated” views as being pompous, nerdy, over educated, self- important, etc.
It would have been a better example to contrast it with a sample of the more common vernacular as used by such inspiring speakers as Will Rogers, Martin Luther King and JFK.

As to differing definitions… well, that’s what makes a horse race.

Enough! Any more of this and I’ll be accusing myself of indulging in illusionary acts of… whatever it was you wrote.

Thanks for indulging me. I’m not sure we’ve changed anything but you made me think and I’ve rather enjoyed this too.

I see what happens when I don't check in on a daily basis. I encourage everyone I meet to always vote their pocketbook. However, I feel that the issues described in this thread regarding the mining industry have been cultivated by rhetoric coming from Republican Party activists much in the same way the NRA is trying to frighten the already gun proponents into believing the Democrats want to take their guns away.

The mine operators want to do away with OSHA and the EPA and the gun manufacturers need a place to sell their guns since many other countries have followed the UK's example regarding firearms. In order to ensure their continued financial success they fabricate scenarios and pass them of as fact to the public.

95% of the information being tossed around regarding the current President is just not true and I firmly believe that if he was 100% Caucasian looking the rhetoric would be much more tempered.
