Of all the countries I'd be concerned about theft, Iceland is NOT one of them (up there with Japan). You can pretty much leave your camera on a picnic bench and safely assume it wouldn't be stolen. Left my batteries charging overnight in public toilets all the time, and never had any incidents.

Or the UAE. No one steal anything. There are cameras everywhere.

Once you bag leaves check-in, it's up for grabs. I never check anything valuable.

Not to mention the rough handling and treatment it receives by the handlers and the 3 or 4 other heavy bags it'll be lying under. Like you Jerry, I always carry my valuables.

Hello! I did purchase the Vanguard Alta Fly 55T. The workshop leaders (Iceland) said it wouldn't work very well when out of the vehicle taking photos. I have a Think Tank Speed Racer v2.0, which I really like but cannot carry the lens and 2 bodies . . .too small. I am flying Iceland Air ... shortest time (5.5 hours vs 12-15 using a US plane) BUT Iceland Air has the absolute most stringent carry-on rules. The Speed Racer is too wide.

If I pack it in my suitcase which will be checked, will it be there when I open it at the hotel? Has anyone had good/bad experiences? If bad, any steps to take to make it more difficult for it to be stolen?

Thank you in advance.

Maybe its me but I always carry on my photo gear and all other valuables. Don't trust anyone rummaging through my bags, which they may and also the harsh handling treatment they're subjected to. Not to mention if for some strange chance its broken or stolen, it won't be available when I arrive. Just make sure you have enough insurance to cover your equipment. Enjoy the trip, sounds wonderful.

I had a TSA lock cut on my last flight. They didn't like my cords/batteries/ham radio antennas/microphones/chargers/tools/refrigerator magnets, I guess.

I too have traveled around the world for 10 years, including some "high risk countries in Africa" and never had a problem. What you can do is take a phone photo of your open bag on departure, then open at baggage claim on arrival near the airline rep and check to insure all you equipment is present.

I have had stuff disappear, and getting any action is pretty much not happening.....

The way thet THROW luggage around I would not put anything that you can not afford to loose. It could end up broken or missing..... I've had bags searched...

If it's valuable, carry it on......

I mainly carry on my camera gear. Ten years ago, though, I had packed a camera bag inside my hard-side suitcase. It had a Nikon body and three lenses in it. The camera bag was not there when I opened the luggage in Tucson. I have always figured that it was stolen by a TSA employee who saw the camera gear in the x-ray check. I was pretty angry, but never received any compensation from the airline or TSA.
On the other hand, I had a Nikon body and a couple lenses packed in my suitcase on a flight to Paris. My bag never appeared on the luggage carousel. After walking around Orly for a while looking for someone to work the issue, I saw my old Samsonite bag set aside on a stopped carousel, lying wide open. Apparently the latches on the bag broke, probably when it was coming off the plane. All my clothes were still there, as was the photo gear. That time American Airlines eventually paid for a new bag.

OP asks about taking an additional empty backpack in the checked luggage.
Most replies say the won't check photo gear or valuables and tell their own personal experience regarding that.

I always carry on my gear. Even putting stuff in coatpockets. I put my tripod and monopod in the the suitcase and it is always opened. I use a combo
Lock but don’t bother setting it cause I know they will open it.

Never had a problem flying within the US, to Europe, Venezuela, the Caribbean, Canada and the UK. I think you are safe. Going to Russia I would be concerned.
