Of all the countries I'd be concerned about theft, Iceland is NOT one of them (up there with Japan). You can pretty much leave your camera on a picnic bench and safely assume it wouldn't be stolen. Left my batteries charging overnight in public toilets all the time, and never had any incidents.

Thank you hammond for adding your reassurance. I am going to put 2 tripods with 2 ballheads and my second camera bag in my luggage. I am allowed two checked bags for "free"...(I am sure it is already built into the price of the ticket!)

Maybe its me but I always carry on my photo gear and all other valuables. Don't trust anyone rummaging through my bags, which they may and also the harsh handling treatment they're subjected to. Not to mention if for some strange chance its broken or stolen, it won't be available when I arrive. Just make sure you have enough insurance to cover your equipment. Enjoy the trip, sounds wonderful.

Hi Blaster34...my valuables will be with me. . . tripods/ball heads/extra camera bag will be in the checked baggage. Will definitely work with our insurance company to ensure everything is covered for replacement value.

This indirectly relates to your question. I have traveled to Iceland several times. Never had a problem with Icelandair with luggage safety or carryon size, shape. Flying out of Reykjavik on the regional carrier, Air Iceland, I did have my carryon weighed and had to move things from my camera backpack into checked luggage. Where you need to be careful is when checking in early at your hotel. If you come in on an early morning flight from the US, you may not be able to check in to your room for several hours. Many of the smaller “European branded” hotels have a luggage closet off the lobby to store your luggage until your room is available for check in. These luggage rooms are unmanned and uncontrolled, anyone can walk in and store luggage and anyone walk out with luggage. I got into the habit of bringing a light weight bicycle lock to secure my bag to the shelving in these rooms. I have also asked the desk person to store my bag behind their area as opposed to the luggage closet. Safe travels.

Very valuable info re Icelandair and arriving early...I am going to contact the photo workshop leader and asked about bags if arriving before the room becomes available! Didn't know to ask that question! Thank you!

I had a TSA lock cut on my last flight. They didn't like my cords/batteries/ham radio antennas/microphones/chargers/tools/refrigerator magnets, I guess.

Thank you n3eg, the cords, batteries, chargers and memory cards go in the small purse they allow. I never thought of refrigerator magnets!

I now have two!!! carry-on bags...I really liked the Vanguard and didn't think 2 cm would be that big of a deal but Icelandair Customer Service said it has to fit within their parameters (and 22 pounds; it weighed 20) So I now also have (since I cannot return the Vanguard after tearing off the tags etc) ThinkTank's Airport Advantage; it is well within their requirements. Why didn't I purchase that one first - because I really wanted the backpack/roller functionality. Well, I now have it for use here!

Have you checked on flights out of Boston? There may be better connections between Rochester and Boston as far as layover time. Provided that there are flights to Iceland from Boston. Montreal is another possibility. Personally, I try to avoid JFK whenever possible.

Hi LFingar, thank you for the suggestion. According to Orbitz, there is only one flight (non-stop) to Iceland from Boston; 5 hours flight time - all the remaining flights are very long!

Cheapest nonstop flight
8:00pm - 6:05am +1Flight spans 1 day
Icelandair logo
Icelandair
5h 5m (Nonstop)
Departure airport:BOS - Arrival airport:KEF
$1,522.47

One stop is

10h 40m (1 stop)
Departure airport:BOS - 1h 15m in LHR Layover 1h 15m in LHRArrival airport:- KEF
3 left at $3,158.54

Not including the flight time and cost from Rochester to Boston...

Toronto is only 3.5 hours away from Rochester; Montreal is much farther...

Not sure why or where you are getting those times & cost, unless flying private jet and stopping to pick up friends. <grin> Realize you have ticket already but there are 6 non-stop flights a day, under 6 hrs flight time, from JFK to KEF, at $473 to $573 round-trip. BTW, I either go thru Expedia or use Skyscanner app.

Oh Stardust! What a rude awakening for me...I have always used Orbitz and didn't realize there would be such a vast difference! And I haven't had my morning coffee yet! I hope this doesn't indicate the type of day I am going to have!! (very big grin). The only saving feature of having this information is that it is flying out of JFK. After this year's experience of sleeping on the floor (1st time for me), I will avoid JFK like the plague!

That being said, just for grins, I will check out the flights from Boston. As you said though, the nonrefundable tickets have been purchased...dagnabit!

Seriously though, thank for you giving me another source for flights! Will definitely use those two moving forward.

I understand. We live in central IL and getting to & from O'Hare is often almost as expensive as the trip flight. I am 72 and hearing aid in one ear. Told wife if other ear ever goes we are buying a house next to O'Hare. I won't hear planes and flights for travel will be so, so much easier!

Enjoy your trip - after 52 countries Iceland still on my bucket list, probably in 2021. Leave for Egypt next month.

I was wondering about your pricing also. I did a quick check of the Icelandair website yesterday and even there the round trip prices from Boston and Montreal were quite different then the prices you quoted.
I don't see where Rochester is travel unfriendly. There are 6 airlines serving the airport with quite a selection of flights to Boston, JFK, etc.
What works for me is to check what airlines service what airports, see what flights and pricing the airlines have and then check the travel sites to see if the flights I want can be had at a lower price.
Hope you get it all sorted out and have a great trip.

Every time I checked bags, they ended up stolen, or lost, or full of damaged contents. I stopped checking bags after the third time. For the last 25 years I have only taken one carry on bag. It works for me. I get my photo gear, computer / tablet, and some ranger rolled clothing in my carry on, and fit it under the seat, or in the overhead compartment. This gives my belongings greater security, makes getting my bag through security checkpoints easier, gives me less to haul, costs me less, and takes less time to get me where I am going.
