Extra camera bag (empty) in checked baggage. Has yours ever been taken en route?

The OP is thinking of putting the second backpack EMPTY in checked luggage. You should be OK and have no issues, but that can't be guaranteed.
It will probably be as tempting as clothes. Anyone looking to steal would aim smaller and more expensive items (easier to remove, hide, take out of airport and sell, for a bigger margin) like electronics or even expensive perfumes.

From my point of view, the lock doesn't prevent someone from stealing of your luggage, it makes you notice that your bag was open right in the airport instead in the hotel or back home :)

juan_uy, thank you for the financial reminder about the worth of an empty camera bag. Very small margin. I like that I would know if the bag was opened ... that second key idea is sounding better and better!

I always put a smaller backpack in my carry on so I don't have to carry the big one around all the time while I'm there. I have never had a problem, and I fly frequently.

Hi splatbass, I like your suggestion but I can't do that . . .the carry-on size is 21.6" x 15.7" x 7.8" or 55 x 40 x 20 cm and no more than 22 pounds. The smaller bag allowed on the flight cannot be larger than 15.7" x 11.8" x 5.9 " or 40 x 30 x 15 cm.

In over 600 flights (and 52 countries) I have never had anything stolen from inside my luggage, even in the days of no locks allowed after 9-11. Now put on a TSA-approved lock, only will be opened in rare scan question. Even if bag is opened, I would bet there are no TSA handlers that would know or care what it was or cost, just another bag to them.

Stardust - that is wonderful news! Thank you for sharing your experience. I know nothing is 100% but with your specific comments and those of LFinger, I am not going to worry about it anymore!

I am just curious about your number of statements about 13-15 hrs if flying from US? There are tons of 5-6 hr flights from JFK and only 8+ hrs with a stop had you flown out of Rochester.

This indirectly relates to your question. I have traveled to Iceland several times. Never had a problem with Icelandair with luggage safety or carryon size, shape. Flying out of Reykjavik on the regional carrier, Air Iceland, I did have my carryon weighed and had to move things from my camera backpack into checked luggage. Where you need to be careful is when checking in early at your hotel. If you come in on an early morning flight from the US, you may not be able to check in to your room for several hours. Many of the smaller “European branded” hotels have a luggage closet off the lobby to store your luggage until your room is available for check in. These luggage rooms are unmanned and uncontrolled, anyone can walk in and store luggage and anyone walk out with luggage. I got into the habit of bringing a light weight bicycle lock to secure my bag to the shelving in these rooms. I have also asked the desk person to store my bag behind their area as opposed to the luggage closet. Safe travels.

You can put a luggage lock on your bag as an extra measure of peace of mind.

It must be a TSA-approved lock - unless they changed that rule. There are lots of keys for those locks, so once it's been checked, almost anyone can open the bag. We took a trip shortly after the TSA was formed, and we had to remove our TSA locks when we checked our bags.

Once you bag leaves check-in, it's up for grabs. I never check anything valuable.

Hello! I did purchase the Vanguard Alta Fly 55T. The workshop leaders (Iceland) said it wouldn't work very well when out of the vehicle taking photos. I have a Think Tank Speed Racer v2.0, which I really like but cannot carry the lens and 2 bodies . . .too small. I am flying Iceland Air ... shortest time (5.5 hours vs 12-15 using a US plane) BUT Iceland Air has the absolute most stringent carry-on rules. The Speed Racer is too wide.

If I pack it in my suitcase which will be checked, will it be there when I open it at the hotel? Has anyone had good/bad experiences? If bad, any steps to take to make it more difficult for it to be stolen?

Thank you in advance.

I would rethink your carry on. I would reconsider what you are taking on board. If you can't take it with you on board, don't take it.

Linda..Iceland is candy land for photographers. You will love it! I often pack an extra backpack in my suitcase. It has always been there when I arrived. Sometimes I also have to pack flashes or hoods, tripods and ball heads. No problem. France cut off my TSA locks on my Pelican case equivalent. I didn't think about that when I did it...something for the future. With a direct out of the US, this shouldn't be an issue. I would suggest that you have a couple of camera straps if you shoot with two bodies. One body with a wide angle and one with a 70-200 or 24-120 ish type. On tours, you maybe pressed for time and will need to shoot quickly. I often walk with the favored lens for that area around my neck and the other one attached to the body in the backpack. Yes, it isn't the best of ideas if you happen to fall but I has worked for me. ENJOY!! I plan to return some day.

I have put an empty camera bag into checked luggage without any problems. Without any equipment in into who would want it.

Several years ago I stupidly put a $300 camera in my luggage for a flight from Ft. Myers to Boston. When I arrived at my destination the suitcase was missing. This suitcase was never found. It had to be somewhere, right? Lesson learned.

I frequently pack a small backpack (empty) in my checked luggage when traveling to Ecuador. I use a larger backpack while on the plane, but for daily use I want a smaller one. I've never had it come up missing. And my bag seems to ALWAYS be opened by TSA. I have had stuff taken - like a baggie that contained DEET and anti-itch stuff - and a Bible once. I always use TSA approved locks.

Depends on what you are putting in it. If it includes batteries, carry it on.

I sometimes carry a second, empty bag. Mine is usually smaller than the one I carry onto the plane. I have never had a problem.
