We checked one off the bucket list today - a hot-air balloon ride. My husband's birthday is on Tuesday, and I decided to surprise him with a unique adventure. It was amazing.

Apparently many other people also had this experience in mind. As we looked back at the other balloons, we realized we were the first launch of seven balloons. Most carried 12-14 passengers plus a pilot.

Air is first blown into the opening of the balloons with large fans. Flames then heat the air in the balloon to make it rise and right the gondola. We climb aboard using holes in the sides of the gondola as steps. The ground crew works to release the balloon as we slowly rise. To control altitude, the pilot intermittently activates the flames. He is also able to control direction slightly by catching the breeze with a flap of fabric on the bottom of the balloon much like a sailor catches the wind in a sail on a sailboat. When it's time to land, the pilot quits activating the flames, and the balloon descends. The ride is incredibly smooth and very relaxing. Landing is a different story. As the balloon touches down, members of the ground crew, who have been in communication with the pilot via a walkie-talkie, and who have been following us in vans, run over to grab the side of the gondola to keep it from tipping over. Once it's stabilized, we climb out and head to the vans for our ride back and a light but lovely champagne brunch.

Wow. I have always wanted to take an hot air balloon ride. My wife is afraid of heights so I would probably have to go without her. The photos are breath taking and the color of the balloons are not as varied as I have seen in other photos. However, the yellows are extremely vivid and are very nice. Thank you for sharing them.

I was hoping for more colorful balloons, but there wasn't much choice. As far as height goes, it was very different from standing on the edge of a cliff or climbing a ladder. Maybe it's that we're not particularly afraid of heights.

Thanks for letting me know you enjoyed these shots. I recommend giving ballooning a try, and I'd certainly do it again.

Sounds like a real hoot, Vicki--lovely shots.

Who needs a drone when there's a balloon ride available. We had a great time and talked about other places to go where this is an offering.

Thanks for taking a look and commenting Earl.

Nice set Vicki. Looks like you enjoyed your time in the sky

Who knows, a little more wind and we could be in Kansas now. All I can say is we both loved it.

Thanks for the visit and comments Jack.

Great photo essay. We have Balloon rides not to far from us as well in Temecula, CA, also a grape growing area. I'm not good with heights, though I've been in small private planes (with the doors closed).

Odd you would say, however true, Earthquake County and not Wine Country. Living my entire life thus far Just South of the San Gabriel Mountains and the San Andreas Fault I am quite aware of the constant threat of Earthquakes. Wild fires too are a problem as you know in many parts of California. We are just beginning yet another fire season now. Luckily where I live is in a build up suburban area and far enough away from wilderness. Stay safe.

Thanks for taking time for this post lamiaceae. I'd love to see some of the balloon events in the S. West. The photos I've seen showed lots of variety and color.

As to my earthquake reference, I added that to my location right after the Napa quake since everyone was more aware of the event at that time. Half the state is "wine country." I'm holding my breath going into fire season.

It's certainly not something you'd think of doing very often. I was surprised to see a balloon floating by this morning (Monday). I thought it was more of a weekend activity, but the weather today was spectacular and certainly better than when we went.

Vicki, it must have been a beautiful experience. Disney World had a ride that simulated a balloon ride and Napa Valley was one of the areas it went over . It was a very large screen and the views were magnificent.

Disney does a very good job with it's rides, and I recall the one you mention which displayed my Ca. iconic vistas as well as wine country. The real deal was incredibly smooth until we bumped down to land. I couldn't imagine what this was going to be like until we got under way. Except for watching the landscape pass by, there wasn't much sensation of movement.

Thanks for taking time for this post Carol.

Beautiful shots Vicki. This is on my bucket list as well...

A little note of critique, you may want to take a little of the noise out, otherwise beautiful photographs.

Thanks for the visit, comments and suggestion. You're right, I should have paid more attention to the noise in post.

nice gift....... nice shots, we are often greeted early mornings by the roar of the flames as they float overhead.........

We started out at Domaine Chandon and were then taken by vans to a field a little northwest of Winters. Napa was completely overcast on Saturday and not suitable for ballooning, but the area around the 505 was clear and calm. They took us back to the winery for a champagne brunch, and we were back in Novato by noon. As the balloon rose, we could glimpse a little Lake Berryessa which was just over the hills from our launch site.

Thanks for the visit Bob.

I too always wanted to go up in one of those till I lost a good photographer friend and his son when they hit power lines and were killed back in the 50s.

I worried about power lines and found comfort in seeing them well below us. There weren't a lot of them in the farm land over which we floated. The pilot seemed to know what he was doing. As modes of transportation go, this is actually very safe.

Thanks for taking time to look and comment Hal. I appreciate it.
