He has not deleted a single e-mail since six years ago...

'When I changed my computer (2013) I lost an e-mail I needed for reference!'

So now He keeps EVERYTHING including junk, in fear of losing something.

The real funny part is if he is a pack rat when it comes to digital information in his life he keeps nothing he does not use at least once in a year and 'house clean' every winter when it too cold to do anything else. That had led to some conflicts with his wife....

He is my FIL by the way.

A digital pack rat is a new one for me. But better than the other type I think.

It is good he has you to help.

No, and I do not even know why that annoying "switch" is even there. There must be some conclave of SD Card Alliance Wizards who set the standard but never had one of those switches break off and lockout contents of the card.

I never use it intentionally - but several times it has slid ‘by itself’ .... and the camera won’t let me take new photos until I correct the situation, so I do know it works.

That has happened to me too, both plugging into camera and also plugging into computer SD slot. I find it very annoying. 😡

Never used it nor needed to use it, kind of a perfunctory function in my opinion. No other memory device ever saw the need for such an action, I viewed it as a gimmick when SD cards came out trying to replace CF cards.

That device is exact functional analogue to "write protection" that was on the various types of floppy disk".

Indeed it is. I don’t recall ever using the 3.5” floppy disk lock either.

Hey!!!

Same system... a plastic slider that obscured a hole. Open: write closed, read only.

Now the 51/4 had an open notch. When this was covered it became read only....

I used the lock regularly to preserve the disk; ‘backup’ could be quite slow, so I didn’t have nearly so many copies of files as I make today. Distribution media often came without hole/slot so someone had to work to lose the contents.

Oh thank you, yes I remember that now about the 51/4 disk. I remember 51/4 disks. LOL.

Interesting how the legacy 5.25 and 3.5 disk systems with “locks” ended up on SD cards. Hmm. What about the new XQD card? Am I the only one who can’t remember the 3-letter name for that? I have to use google every time to remember it. I guess Google is my collective memory. :(

Ok I have a Z7 next to me. I am looking at the (single) memory card. The Sony 64GB XQD card I have in my Z7 does not have any external switches. Good riddance to them. LOL.

Not yet but might consider on a vacation if I don't want to risk re-using a full card while sleep walking.

Never, at least not intentionally. If I were on a trip and filling up cards to bring home, I might lock them. On the other hand, I could also put the used ones in a "Used" case.
