I'm curious so a survey is in order.

Do you use the lock function on the SD memory and if so how do you use it? What for?

Never.
Before deleting images, or reformatting the card, I always check what's on there first.

Is that a follow up on the 'what the heck is that thing*' from a recent thread?

* paraphrasing

Yes. A follow-up from this thread.

I am curious to know if anyone uses it and for what purpose.

I did not reply to that thread because I would have been rather snarky in my answer....

Just once - Photos of my son's Wedding. Downloaded, labeled and locked the SDHC and gave it to him.

Yes. I use some low capacity SD cards to store camera settings. I do not want accidentally erase them, so I lock them. I unlock them if I intend to update the settings, and then lock them afterwards.

I almost did....

Why I did not...

The most answers will be 'No.' but I know of at least one person who would say 'Yes.' because I used this option to prevent him to erase his own images... 88 years old man who just purchases a new card when his is full... He never prints anything and never shows his images. He has digital cameras since 2005 so no one has any idea what he has on them, mostly family stuff I would think.

Not funny at all. He complained his e-mail was slow and asked me to take a look....

He has not deleted a single e-mail since six years ago...

'When I changed my computer (2013) I lost an e-mail I needed for reference!'

So now He keeps EVERYTHING including junk, in fear of losing something.

The real funny part is if he is a pack rat when it comes to digital information in his life he keeps nothing he does not use at least once in a year and 'house clean' every winter when it too cold to do anything else. That had led to some conflicts with his wife....

He is my FIL by the way.

I never use it intentionally - but several times it has slid ‘by itself’ .... and the camera won’t let me take new photos until I correct the situation, so I do know it works.
