Yes! Endless possibilities.

Seriously, though, there must be some benefit to this technology, or Sony wouldn't waste the R&D on it.

Sony is a gimmick firm, changes models annually like they do TV's hoping the consumer is ignorant enough to fall for the latest. Apple is another excellent example, new cell phone every 6 months and all the little Apples line up to get it.

The current dpreview issue reports on Sony’s announcement of a ‘smart’ battery for their full-frame mirrorless cameras. You get a smart device (iPhone etc) app to get readouts of battery condition. You can also get internal updates when the battery is ‘online.’ Whatever will the Sony Wizards think of next. Who else saw the report.

Just something else that can be hacked!

Thats JUST what Sony batteries need, one more way to suck the power out of them even faster!

I don't use apps on my smart phone. I don't have a smart phone. I barely use the cellphone that I have. (Just one of the perks of being retired, IMO). Anyway, for your camera, and it's battery, to communicate with your smart phone, as far as I know, the only ways are if you are in close proximity to the camera or if the camera is communicating with an internet capable device such as a laptop. If that is correct then the only way I see this new capability being useful would be if you have your camera set up out of your immediate reach and are triggering it remotely, such as at a bird feeder. I have also seen mention here on the Hog of people being responsible for a number of cameras at big events and such. I guess it would help them keep track of things. Otherwise, I have a hard time seeing where this is in anyway an improvement over simply looking at the battery status displayed on my camera.

But this thing consumes battery power. Another thing to shorten battery life.

So, it would be the smart phone that needs the jumper cables?

I don't think it's a useful feature but I don't say that some day I don't have one of those in one of my device. The reason is that some day that is the only type you can buy.

My wife still likes her flip-phone, I have my 6 year old S-III (they're selling the 10 now).
And of course there's my 9 year old DSLR and my 13 year old H-1.
Guess I don't need the latest and greatest.

The first thing that springs to mind is that a "smart" battery is yet another back door into your connected systems should some hacker want in.
