The current dpreview issue reports on Sony’s announcement of a ‘smart’ battery for their full-frame mirrorless cameras. You get a smart device (iPhone etc) app to get readouts of battery condition. You can also get internal updates when the battery is ‘online.’ Whatever will the Sony Wizards think of next. Who else saw the report.

I haven't seen that report, but wouldn't it be easier to just look at the battery readout on the camera?

I love new tech but that's just useless "glitter".

OMG!! You guys are picking on the millennials. Now they will need a safe quiet place to gather their wits. The more useless it is the more they will want it.

You COULD do it that old fashioned way, but this way you can ALSO check your battery status when you're grocery shopping with your kid, right after you pay your electric bill online (like the TV ad around here shows some woman doing, literally with a kid in the shopping cart seat.) Or when you're traveling across the country with a different camera. The opportunities are simply endless.

You're kidding right?
Why would you want or need to check your camera's battery status when you're traveling across the country with a different camera?

Another APP I wouldn't need.

I set mine to display a black screen when it has discharged. Smart!

Just another gimmick to charge 3x the price for a battery.

Yes! Endless possibilities.

Seriously, though, there must be some benefit to this technology, or Sony wouldn't waste the R&D on it.

It's not a Sony battery ... it is made by Nitecore, designed for Sony's latest camera bodies.
