Xiaomi has announced a 108MP sensor phone camera. It will out-pixel the medium format Fujifilm GX100.

Oh boy - 108 MP selfies clogging up the internet. Wonder how long it will take to upload them to your social media site.

Oh boy, the ugliness of the MP race is moving to cell phones. Now maybe we can calm down a bit on cameras.

YUP!
Apparently it is based on Fuji/Samsung Isocell Plus sensor technology which separates pixel sites to reduce 'crosstalk' thus reducing noise and enhancing colors.

In ten years time we will be reminiscing about 'back in the old days when we used real cameras' - at least those of us still around will.

The camera phone uses ISOCELL - 3D-Backside Illuminated Pixel with Front-Side Deep-Trench Isolation (F-DTI) and Vertical Transfer Gate (VTG). Its an upside down sensor with the photo-diodes on top and the circuitry underneath with various mechanical/physical improvements to reduce noise and color crosstalk. From what I can tell its a good sensor, the design is intended for small phone type sensors, ones not stacked with the additional electronic components needed to get a high contract/high color/very low noise image. The other thing to keep in mind that this technology really works best with small high density sensors such as are found in phones, Drones, surveillance equipment, and wearable cameras.

Megapixels alone don't make a "camera".

You are so right, but tell that to a lot of people.

Sad but true.

Much more concise than my long winded version.

Without a lens capable of very high resolution, all those extra pixels mean nothing. They only produce bigger files, with a lot of redundant pixels not doing anything positive for the image.

Its possible to produce a small inexpensive lens with very high resolution. Its far less possible to produce one without numerous aberrations that would normally limit the lens's resolving power. Adding a lot of computer power, cheap nowadays, and all the aberrations can be corrected. The result is a small inexpensive high resolving lens. This is basically how cell phone camera's work - the lens isn't too great but its problems are correctable during normal image processing.

There is a lot more to a good camera than resolving power. However, there are applications where resolving power is all that needed. Surveillance and uniform mounted devices - you want absolutely as much resolving power as you can get. With 108mp you can focus on one tiny segment of an image use high magnification of it and still have a high resolution image.

I see this as a huge opportunity for memory makers. How long will it take to fill storage :)
