Excellent. The part about hunter trying to kill 399 really got me. I live in bear country and we cherish them. Many don’t.

I have never subscribed to killing for sport.

Google “60 Minutes” and see if it is available on their web site. Worth a try.

FYI..... Bear 399 was killed by vehicle in the park

I just read that it was her only cub, "Snowy," who was killed in May. 399 tried to save it. No word on any injuries she may have sustained.

Latest on Google is dated May 18, 2017. It ref cub “Snowy” being killed, so perhaps 399 is still roaming free!

That story about Menglesen was a repeat from earlier in the season. It was incredible no matter how many times you see it. He has the time and the patience. The Bear and the Salmon was shot on film. I am curious the size lenses he was using.

My guess on the big gun on the Nikon was about an F5.6 800 Prime.

Probably, at least something close to 800. Lots time it showed Mangelsen shooting HH! Wow.

Thanks for the link to the video. Saw it when first aired but wanted to re-view it. Nice he gave Cooper the bigger glass to use but he also espouses to include the environment in the shot. I mean if you are at the base of the Tetons and shoot tight you've wasted the location.
I have a friend I shoot with that used to shoot with Tom. Mangelsens skills are great but his best feature is he is committed and persistent. Funny to see the other video links about whiskey and Jane Goodall. My friend is a part of the old group that shot well and then took shots into the night. Quite the storyteller - when the circle is losing interest or someone is starting in on one of their own tales he always pulls it back to him with "I was having dinner with Jane Goodall one evening". Never fails. He met Jane through Mangelsen. Not sure who, or if, anyone will ever take their places.

He made an interesting comment/observation about that photo. He said he could easily have artificially created that image, but believes photographs should be made in the camera, not on the computer. He will trudge hours and wait hours for the "perfect shot!"
