I am 71 and have worn hearing aids for many years. I have gotten them from drs at Hershey Med center, dealers, audiologists, etc. I started getting them at Costco years ago. In January of this year I got new ones at Costco. I have never heard better. The Kirkland brand is made by rexton..they are 1599. They connect to my iPhone using an app so I can pick program, vol, check battery charge. Etc. most of the time I don’t even know I have them on. I also got the tv streamer for them. My wife has great hearing, but she often asks me what someone said...most of the time I heard what was said.

Anyway. Good luck.
Chuck

I need hearing aids. I started competing in rifle matches in the '50's and always tried to protect my ears but sometimes... Now at 71 years old I am losing my hearing. I tried some Amazon cheapies and they sort of worked, but in a restaurant or classroom environment they just boosted the background noise. Anyone have any tips or recommendations? Of course I am looking for a low price since I am retired and on a limited budget.

If you are not a vet, go to Costco. Last year I needed new hearing aids. Since I spent a fortune on my previous aids that sat in a drawer because they didn't do the job, I decided to perform due diligence before spending thousands of dollars again. I made appointments with the top eight hearing aid companies in Orange County, California. Each vendor gave me a hearing test. All eight gave similar results. I asked a lot of questions at each vendor; about their products and my hearing. When I had finally decided on a $4,000 plus pair of Beltones, a friend suggested that I go to Costco. At Costco they gave me their hearing test using the latest and most advanced equipment (based on what I saw at the other vendors). I ended up buying a pair of their top of the line hearing aids for around $1,600 that worked just as well as the $4,000 Beltones and noticeably better then the others I tried; all of which were over $2,500.

If you are not a Costco member, even adding in the cost of a Costco annual membership you will still save a minimum or $1,000 on your hearing aids.

Lots of good advice here for where to get your aids. However, I have been wearing aids for 30 years and I can say there is no real solution for noisy restaurants and gathering places. My ear doctor told me years ago to go for the volume and forget about trying to filter frequencies. My friends allow me to arrange the seating in a restaurant. I am totally deaf in my left ear so that is where my wife gets to sit. I pick the person that I most want to have a conversation with on my right. (Better check this out with the little lady before hand.) You will adapt to the aids quickly. It's really about managing your expectations.

with the kirkland brand hearing aids i now have i am able to use one of the programs in restaurants and other situations that works well for me...also, since they have several mics i can use my iphone to narrow the field of hearing so that i only have front facing mics so i need to turn my head for best hearing for me...you can also get an omni directional remote mic that you can put in the center of the table to hear other really well...there is also a clip on mic that can be given to one person, such as your wife, so you can hear them really well...

Lots choices here where to buy them but I'm going to tell what I think are features that might interest you. I did get mine at the VA. They Phonak Marvel. These are new to the market. They are one of the few on the market that stream to your Android phone in both ears. They are rechargeable with a 30 hour use between charges. In addition, the VA provided me with a "streamer" that is connected to my TV and the sound from the TV streams in my earing aids. If you choose, you can listen to music from your phone in stereo thru the hearing aids, obviously you can answer your phone as well and hear the party thru both ears. If you have an I-phone there are lots of choices that do the same thing, but as of today the Marvel is the only hearing aid that does the features I just mentioned. Technology is changing daily with hearing aids, so check with the VA if you are eligible or Costco as they do have the best pricing for the rest of folks that need hearing aids. Most important is to get someone very familiar with fitting them correctly. I'm not saying comfort fit, I'm saying hearing fit. When I got my first pair they were terrible, went back to the VA and had them adjusted and the second doctor was much more versed and did an outstanding job. When I upgrade just two weeks ago, I asked the VA for the same doctor. The new ones are outstanding and I absolutely love them. Good luck with your choices.

Consumer Reports (which takes no advertising) has the highest rating for Costco's hearing aids and excellent marks for its service.

If you qualify, get a cochlear implant, the quality is wonderful, I have had mine for 8 years now, and I don't regret it

I must say I have a drawer full of hearing aids. But I finally got so deaf that I qualified for a cochlear implant. It is the final destination on hearing loss, and having worn it for several years now, I must say they aren't perfect. But at least I can somewhat hear. Yeah, I can hear every key on a piano. I love listening to music, but can't make out the words they are singing. I have trouble hearing in a noisy room, but do fairly well in a quiet atmosphere. All I can say is; for those who listen to loud music or sounds, you are destined to be wearing one.

Keep in mind that a large part of the cost you pay an audiologist is for future follow up adjustments which would not be available from the bargain priced web or mail order suppliers. Not sure how the new rules regarding OTC hearing aids will effect the market.

The generic description, "I can't hear or I do not hear well", is just that, generic! Other than very high frequency sounds, I hear very well. The plaguing hearing issue I face is discrimination. "I hear what you say, but I do not understand what you said". People laugh at that statement, but it accurately describes my hearing difficulty. "When you say, "did you see the movie", I hear, "did you (he, see, we, gee, me, fee, be ...) the movie"? High frequency losses lose consonant sounds, but hear the vowel sounds which are low frequency sounds. Consonant sounds are all high frequency sounds. Hence, confusion in hearing speech. "I do hear you, I just do not understand what you said"!! A high frequency loss is very common as one grows older.

The old hearing aid joke -
"Hi Harry. Hi Joe. Hey Joe, I got a new hearing aid. That's great, Harry. What kind is it? Harry says, "about 7:30"
That accurately describes my hearing loss.

Being fitted with the the CORRECT hearing aid for a specific loss is crucial. A competent, well trained audiologist is absolutely necessary.
During 42 years of wearing hearing aids, I've had 5 audiologists, some due to changes in residences.

This is great information. I have suffered from hearing loss for many years, since I was in Viet Nam, when I chose not to wear any ear protection while on the flight line.

The high pitch whine of the F4-E engines took quite a toll on my hearing, but I never told anyone about it when I was in the service, cause it didn't really bother me that much. Huge mistake!

Now its a constant "huh; what did you say; can you repeat that," etc.
