I need hearing aids. I started competing in rifle matches in the '50's and always tried to protect my ears but sometimes... Now at 71 years old I am losing my hearing. I tried some Amazon cheapies and they sort of worked, but in a restaurant or classroom environment they just boosted the background noise. Anyone have any tips or recommendations? Of course I am looking for a low price since I am retired and on a limited budget.
Thanks,

The generic description, "I can't hear or I do not hear well", is just that, generic! Other than very high frequency sounds, I hear very well. The plaguing hearing issue I face is discrimination. "I hear what you say, but I do not understand what you said". People laugh at that statement, but it accurately describes my hearing difficulty. "When you say, "did you see the movie", I hear, "did you (he, see, we, gee, me, fee, be ...) the movie"? High frequency losses lose consonant sounds, but hear the vowel sounds which are low frequency sounds. Consonant sounds are all high frequency sounds. Hence, confusion in hearing speech. "I do hear you, I just do not understand what you said"!! A high frequency loss is very common as one grows older.
The old hearing aid joke -
"Hi Harry. Hi Joe. Hey Joe, I got a new hearing aid. That's great, Harry. What kind is it? Harry says, "about 7:30"
That accurately describes my hearing loss.
Being fitted with the the CORRECT hearing aid for a specific loss is crucial. A competent, well trained audiologist is absolutely necessary.
During 42 years of wearing hearing aids, I've had 5 audiologists, some due to changes in residences.
