What you don't get from Costco or Sam's Club is continuing follow up and adjustments to improve your satisfaction with the aids. I don't know how the cheapest HAs do but I spent a lot more and am seeing the audiologist about every two weeks for adjustments and advice. This won't stop until they think I have reached maximum utility from the HAs. And I never was on a rifle team, I just got old.

For civilians, Costco is a good choice. You have to schedule an appointment with Costco; however, in our area, they are good details people. Plus, they will clean the hearing aids if necessary. Their batteries are inexpensive as well. The last time I checked it, Costco hearing-aids are made in Germany...and that commonly equals quality. The price of the hearing aids is very competitive.

I did not get involved with the VA but two options. 1 I went to Costco and they are fine. Went back after a few years and they reset me up including replacing one with a battery that ran outdo often at no charge. The other option is I see all kinds of cheep ones in the VFW magazine and TV.

If you are buying new HAs look for those that have a recharging option instead of batteries. The charger is like phone chargers, laptops, etc in that with the correct plug it can be used world wide (internal variable voltage). No more fiddling with tiny batteries.

I've been wearing hearing aids in both ears since 1956.... Currently wearing Signia (formerly Seimens) in the canal aids. The industry has come a long way when it comes to miniaturization. I would not have been able to wear these just a decade ago. The more features, the higher the cost, regardless of who makes them. I had insurance ( other than Medicare) when I got mine and wound up paying $300 for the pair. Had to replace one I lost and the warranty cost was $300 for a single aid. They are not cheap. The lesser cost ones are the ones that sit behind your ear...When I first got mine in 1956, they were fitted onto glasses (which I did not need) Hated those...

I have had continuous follow up and adjustments from Costco. They have their own audio test lab and I have had several free follow visits. In fact I submerged my hearing aid in water and the would not work properly. They replaced them free of charge. You get no more from specialized audiologist companies.

I need hearing aids. I started competing in rifle matches in the '50's and always tried to protect my ears but sometimes... Now at 71 years old I am losing my hearing. I tried some Amazon cheapies and they sort of worked, but in a restaurant or classroom environment they just boosted the background noise. Anyone have any tips or recommendations? Of course I am looking for a low price since I am retired and on a limited budget.

Thanks,

The really cheap ones are just amplifiers which will boost all of the noise which isn't helpful as you have found out.
The bottom line is they aren't cheap. Decent ones are about 5000.00 +.
You should go to a local hearing aid place, get a hearing test and check out the options. Then do the same thing at one or two other hearing aid places and compare. It's all free to do this.

I've read that Costco has good hearing aids at reasonable prices. Check out the reviews. They seem to have very happy customers.

I just got mine this past Friday at Costco ($1599.99 for both ears). Less than 1/2 price of Sam's club and the "Pro" place and in two days of use thay are great. I like the "cafe" program best.

I have had mine from Costco for years. Great service and the lowest price on batteries.

I've been wearing a hearing-aid for all of my life in my left ear, as I am completely deaf in my right ear. The last 20 years or so, I was using Beltone hearing aids, but I became discouraged with the last one that I received in 2015. I went to a local audiologist and she did a complete evaluation - including asking me pertinent questions about what I would want from a hearing-aid. Most important to me was being able to listen to classical musical (mostly piano and violin concertos by Mozart), which the Beltone proved to be inadequate. I also play piano and wanted to hear the upper keys clearly and to hear the deep rich tones of the bass keys. She recommended a ReSound hearing-aid, which was developed to be used by musicians and non-musicians alike. The ReSound was a game changer for me in a number of ways. I was hearing high frequency sounds that the Beltone simply could not resolve. I discovered that my rice cooker, microwave and other appliances make beeping sounds! Best of all, I can control every aspect of the hearing-aid via my iPhone (sound volume & quality, environmental factors, etc. . .) The audiologist included an external mic that plugs into any audio device and transmits all audio directly to my hearing-aid without the need for headsets. I am now able to play my digital Yamaha piano in complete privacy so as not to disturb others when trying to learn a new composition. I watch TV and listen to CDs - all audio transmitted to my hearing-aid via Bluetooth. You can find out more at www.resound.com
Prior to getting the ReSound, I did check out Costgo and was going to use them because of their very reasonable prices but they didn't use billing codes that my insurance provider wanted.

Lee,
I am 82 and have been wearing hearing aids for 42 years. I have a very severe high frequency loss. High tech hearing aids are very expensive. Costco seems to offer quality ones for less. The VA, if you qualify, are free. I have had quite a few pairs of aids over the years. A good/trained/professional audiologist is a must.
I currently have Oticon vpn aids. "Cheapies" are not the way to go. First step is to have a hearing test from a qualified professional audiologist in your area.
Good luck,
Mark

I also have hearing aids from Costco, but suggest that you first get an evaluation from an Ear, nose & throat doctor (otolaryngologist). He/she will assess if hearing aids are the best solution for your type of hearing loss. Undoubtedly, he/she will also have an audiologist give you a hearing test. You can take that test to Costco and they can use it to set up the hearing aid. Costco will do that, as well, but it saves a step.
