Keep in mind that a large part of the cost you pay an audiologist is for future follow up adjustments which would not be available from the bargain priced web or mail order suppliers. Not sure how the new rules regarding OTC hearing aids will effect the market.

Costco includes follow up adjustments and cleanings.

"Hence, confusion in hearing speech. "I do hear you, I just do not understand what you said"!! A high frequency loss is very common as one grows older. " I've had loss of the high notes my entire life. My loss was due to too much pressure on my head with the forceps when I was born. I have more trouble understanding women's speech than men's as their speech tends to be higher frequencies... I too have had several audiologists over the decades for much the same reason. My first aids were Beltone. I remember going to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore for a hearing test back in the late 60's in order to qualify for a grant for college...

I believe all audiologists do that for 3 years, the warranty period of the manufacturer.

If you're a Costco member, check them out. Good, affordable options. If you're not a member, consider joining.

I have a pair of phonak brio III's that work well and were about half the price of going to a hearing aid center.

Costco also had a private label set that were even led expensive.

Hi Lee - If you are a US veteran and registered with the VA, you can get 'em free so check into this. Great diagnostic service, your choice of the top quality hearing aids, free batteries, etc. chase

Maybe if you are a US veteran, retired with 20 yrs service, or have a service connected disability--you might get a hearing aid for free. If you are a veteran with only 6 yrs service and no service connected disability, they tell you to "take a hike cause they have too many others who want medical care". It was a total waste of time for me to be in the military--did not receive one benefit.

I was fortunate to develop a profound hearing loss in my left ear almost overnite. The VA did a brain MRI to try and determine the cause. It was my first MRI butt it seemed to me to be taking a long time. By craning my neck around I was just able to see in the control room.
A covey of white coats was gathered around screen, I didn't think this was a good sign. They eventually let me up and showed me the MRI.

They pointed out a white blob about the size of a walnut, they said it was a cyst and it had to be removed before it grew larger and burst. I said "OK, when?" They said "We have you scheduled for surgery next Tuesday."

I had to turn around, return to McAllen and get someone to look after my roping horse and dog's. They said the cyst was not related to my hearing loss just fortunate that it happend so they discoved the cyst.

The brain is a tricky thing, I had mjor memory loss following the surgery, took about two years to recover. The VA has audiology department has done well by me. I have a profound hearing loss in the left ear, significant in the right.

I have periodic hearing tests and hearing aid upgrades. I don't use them as much now as before, not as much worth listening to. I do listen to some music on line with Klipsch ear buds. Another option I have is to use the hearing aids and a Phonak wirless transmitter that I can plug in to the computer or TV.

I've heard some VA horror stories butt I've been very well treated since the 70's, now on 100% VA disability.

I have a pair from Costco. They're the 8.0 premium. I also bought the remote control that connects to my phone. Works great I can hear the callers much better. My wife likes them too because she doesn't have to speak louder.

I need hearing aids. I started competing in rifle matches in the '50's and always tried to protect my ears but sometimes... Now at 71 years old I am losing my hearing. I tried some Amazon cheapies and they sort of worked, but in a restaurant or classroom environment they just boosted the background noise. Anyone have any tips or recommendations? Of course I am looking for a low price since I am retired and on a limited budget.

Thanks,

~Lee

You must be professionally fitted. Good hearing aids aren't necessarily cheap. When my father was losing his hearing he absolutely refused. But I persisted and suggested he get a pal at the VA Hospital. He balked but didn't mind them after a while. In no time he could hear my secrets to my wife.

40 years after discharge went to VA when told about getting hearing aids from them, was disqualified because I had not had hearing test performed regularly over that period. My records showed I was just short of hearing disability when discharged. I guess they thought my hearing was going to get better with age. Went to Costco and after 5 years will replace them for new ones in December.

Same here, Marine Corps 1960 to 1966. I brought the VA the results of my hearing test that was done by an MD and was turned down.

I got mine at Costco and I am extremely happy with them. That being said there are big changes being mandated by the government to the hearing industry. Hearing aids (yes, hearing aids, not amplifiers) are now being offered at Wal mart and other department stores at a fraction of what they used to cost. One TV ad was touting around $600 for both ears! AARP published about 10 pages of information about this in their periodical about three months ago. I'm sure you can get the information through them. Good luck!

Costco is the place to go. High quality hearing aides. Good service, regular check ups and adjustment included with the price as well.
