My law school roommate practices in Ebensburg. Pretty area, nice town. St Francis College, scenic school is nearby. He taught for a while in Pittsburgh law school. He was always very particular about making sure I, and everyone else at school in Virginia, knew that Pittsburgh is the ONLY burg/burgh in the U.S. that uses an “h” at the end of its’ spelling. I wonder why. Is there anyone out there who knows why the city’s founding fathers decided to spell it that unique way?

You can read about that here......

My brother lived in Ebensburg. You are right, it is pretty.

There are three Rivers that come together there in Pittsburgh also, at the Steelers stadium...

Allegheny
Ohio
Monogahela

Great photo ops there, especially when they is a game. People go down the inclines and take boats to the stadium.....

That was truly extremely informative. Thank you for providing the information.

I gotta let my former roommate know he was mentioned here on our Forum, even if his name was not used.

Mac - it takes 5-6 hours to cross the state of PA from the eastern side (near NYC) to the western side - where Pittsburgh is. Altoona is just about half-way across the state - so, three hours from Pittsburgh!!!

According to Google Earth Altoona is a little shy of 100 miles from Pittsburgh, as the crow flies and just a little less than 200 miles from Philadelphia by the same measure. So it sits at about in the western 1/3 of the state.

You are correct.... By 22 and way of Ebensburg, it's 2 hrs, right at 100 miles. My brother used to live in Ebensburg, about 30 miles from Altoona, or 70 from Pittsburgh. Beautiful country.....

Oh, okay, PH … then, that settles it, then … not quite halfway … Google MUST know what they're doing, eh?

Actually I used the measure option on Google Earth to determine it.

And THAT showed Altoona to be 100 miles east of Pittsburgh, and 200 miles west of Philadelphia, huh, PH?

But, that's as the crow flies - right? … Try doing THAT trip in just FIVE hours! … 'Tain't possible!!!!

No, it's Road miles........ Any navigator will show that....I used to drive it.......Altoona is actually 98 miles east of PB by 22. About 30 from Ebensburg, where my brother lived.... Easy drive.

as the crow flies is the only thing straight in central Pa. Getting to Pittsburgh is easy now, but you should have driven it in the 1950s & 60s.

Back when you were driving it before retirement and the roads were not as good, maybe. Now with better road surfaces and higher speed limits it can be done in about 5 hours. Going from Pittsburgh to Philly by the turnpike it is 335 miles (according to a navigtion app) and at 65 mph it can be done in 5.15 hours. Plus, I am sure not everyone stays at or below the speed limit.

Don't think you can maintain 65mph all the way across the state, though, PH …

With stops and starts (for things like coffee, and gas) - it's closer to six (averaging 55) … a LONG haul!!!!
